2How it works
How Tiguan keys and the immobilizer work
The metal blade opens the door and on key start cars turns the ignition. The transponder chip inside talks to the immobilizer when you switch on, and only a chip that has been programmed to your car lets the engine start. The remote buttons lock and unlock the doors by radio, and on Keyless Access cars the key also lets you open the doors and start the car without taking it out of your pocket.
We read the immobilizer data with VW diagnostic tools and add the new key, and at the same time we can delete any lost keys. On Mk2 Tiguans the immobilizer is more secure, and some cases need extra steps or an online session, which we explain before we start.
A weak key fob battery gives short remote range or a key not detected message on keyless cars. Folding keys wear at the hinge, so the blade flops or will not stay open, and buttons crack after years in Dubai heat. These can often be fixed with a new battery, a new shell or a new blade, keeping your existing chip and saving the cost of a new key.
If the key works but the car still will not switch on, the fault may be the ignition switch, start button or steering lock instead, which we cover on our ignition switch page. We test both so you do not pay for a key you do not need.
