Which Polo do you drive?

Two Polo generations and the Polo GTI are common in the UAE. The engine and gearbox codes establish the correct parts, fluids and timing drive.

2010 to 2017

Polo Mk5

  • Engines, 1.6 and 1.4 petrol options vary by engine code. Confirm belt or chain before quoting.
  • Gearbox, 6 speed automatic or 5 speed manual.
  • Watch for, timing chain rattle, water pump leaks and harsh automatic shifts.
2018 onwards

Polo Mk6

  • Engines, Petrol specifications vary by market. Confirm the engine code and timing drive.
  • Gearbox, 6 speed automatic or manual.
  • Watch for, AC performance, battery health and timing belt age.
2010 onwards

Polo GTI

  • Engines, 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI with a chain.
  • Gearbox, DSG or manual, depending on engine and year.
  • Watch for, DSG judder, coils and cooling leaks.

Not sure which engine or gearbox you have? Send a photo of the registration card or the VIN and we confirm the codes before quoting.

Faults by generation

Which Polo problems affect each generation?

Older Mk4 and Mk5 Polos mostly show cooling leaks, timing chain rattle on chain engines and harsh automatic shifts. Mk6 complaints also depend on the fitted engine and equipment; a generation label is not a failure ranking. The GTI adds DSG and coil faults. The engine code decides the timing drive, so we confirm it before quoting.

Faults we see most

Where to read more

Polo Mk42002 to 2009

Ageing coolant hoses and radiators, window regulators, ignition coils, worn suspension bushes and tired electrics on high mileage cars.

Start with a Polo problems check, as most faults on these cars come from age.

Polo Mk52010 to 2017

Cold start rattle on timing chain engines, water pump leaks, harsh or late automatic shifts, AC condenser leaks and body electrics.

See our Polo timing chain and Polo water pump guides.

Polo Mk62018 onwards

Weak AC in summer traffic, battery and start stop warnings, timing belt age on belt engines and infotainment glitches.

Gearbox complaints are covered on our Polo gearbox page.

Polo GTI2010 onwards

DSG judder or jerky low speed shifts, coil pack misfires, cooling leaks and carbon on direct injection engines.

Engine light and module faults are covered on our Polo ECU page.

Prices for each job are in the price guide on this page. A timing chain kit is guided at AED 1,800 to 3,000 and a water pump at AED 700 to 1,600.

No start

Why will my Polo not start?

A Polo no-start can involve the battery, terminals, starter circuit, key authorisation, fuel supply, sensors or mechanical condition. Note whether it cranks, clicks or stays silent. Appropriate battery/supply and fault tests narrow the checks; the symptom alone does not identify a failed part.

Before calling, note whether the dashboard lights come on, whether the engine cranks and whether a key or immobiliser light flashes. Our VW will not start guide explains each test in more detail.

Nothing happens, or lights are dim

Usually a flat or tired battery, or a corroded terminal or earth strap. Battery AED 350 to 1,800 by type.

A single click, no crank

A starter motor or its solenoid, or a battery too weak to turn the engine. We test the battery first so the starter is not replaced by mistake.

Cranks but does not fire

A fuel pump or relay, a sensor such as the crank sensor, or an immobiliser that does not recognise the key. Codes guide the next tests; they do not prove which component has failed.

Key light flashing

An immobiliser or key fault. The remote-button battery and immobiliser authorisation are different systems; a passive transponder can work without a good remote battery. Check the key and vehicle-side system before programming. Key fob replacement and programming AED 500 to 1,200.

Body electrics

What are the signs of Polo BCM problems?

The body control module, or BCM, runs the lights, wipers, central locking, horn and other comfort functions on the Polo. When it or its wiring fails, several unrelated electrical items start acting up at once, or the battery drains overnight. Low voltage, corroded connectors and water ingress are common causes, so we test those before replacing the module.

What you notice

  • Lights that stay on or flicker
  • Central locking or windows not responding
  • Wipers or horn working on their own
  • Battery flat after the car stands overnight

Usual causes

  • A weak battery giving low voltage
  • Corroded connectors or a poor earth
  • Water reaching the module or its wiring
  • Wrong coding after a part was replaced

How we test

  • Read supported modules relevant to the fitted systems
  • Check supply voltage and earths
  • Measure battery drain with the car locked
  • Repair the wiring or replace and code the BCM

Electrical diagnosis on the Polo is guided from AED 250. Module and wiring repairs are quoted after testing. See our Polo ECU and electrics page.

Engine

Engine light on

What you notice

Higher fuel use or rough idle with a warning light.

Usual cause and our check

Often an oxygen sensor, coils or plugs. A scan and appropriate tests check the cause.

Electrics

Which parts and repair option fits?

A small repair can be appropriate when the fault is limited to a boot, seal or connector. The part and repair method must still meet the application.

Genuine Volkswagen
Volkswagen-branded parts matched to the vehicle. Ask for the part details and availability on the written quote.
OEM supplier
The proposed manufacturer and specification should be named. Compare the complete fitted scope with the genuine option where both are available.
Repair or larger replacement
Use the test findings to choose. Compare parts condition, labour, fluids, coding and testing. The proposed parts and price are listed before you approve work. Old parts are returned on request. Ask for the warranty terms for the specific job.

Polo questions

Straight answers before you book your Polo in.

Battery and charging-system check for a Polo
Battery and charging-system check for a Polo
Why does my Polo not start in the morning?

Battery charge/condition and supply connections are useful first checks, but starting faults can involve the starter, wiring, key authorisation, fuelling, sensors or engine condition. Note whether it cranks, clicks or remains silent. A scan or battery age alone does not establish the failed part.

What does the BCM do on a VW Polo?

The body control module manages the lights, wipers, central locking, horn and other comfort functions. When it or its wiring has a fault, several electrical items can misbehave together or the battery can drain overnight. We check voltage, earths, connectors and fault codes before deciding whether the module needs repair or replacement.

How much does Polo servicing cost in Dubai?

The existing guide is AED 350 to 700 for a minor service and AED 700 to 1,400 for a major service. The actual items depend on the engine and what is due. The written quote should list oil, filters, checks and any additional scheduled work so the two options can be compared fairly.

Does the Polo have a belt or chain?

Polos use different engine families, with belt and chain timing drives across versions and markets. Do not select a kit from Mk5 or Mk6 alone. We identify the engine code and review the service record before quoting. An unexplained start-up rattle needs diagnosis rather than an automatic timing-chain replacement.

Is a gearbox service enough for jerky shifts?

Sometimes a fluid-related issue is involved, but valve-body, clutch, control or internal faults can also cause harsh shifts. The automatic, DSG and manual systems need different checks. The existing fluid-service guide is AED 500 to 900. A scan and appropriate testing establish whether servicing, repair or replacement is suitable.

Why does my Polo lose coolant?

An external leak may come from a hose, seal, pump, radiator or housing. Other engine faults require separate evidence. A cooling pressure test helps locate the source before parts are ordered. The fitted water-pump guide is AED 700 to 1,600. Stop safely if the car overheats and avoid opening the cap while hot.

What causes clicking when turning?

A worn outer CV joint is one possibility, especially with a split boot, but other steering and suspension faults can make noises. The joint, boots and surrounding components need inspection. If caught before joint damage, a boot repair may be appropriate. The quote should identify the side and the complete repair scope.

Can an engine code identify a failed sensor?

A fault code points to a monitored condition or circuit, not necessarily a failed sensor. Wiring, air leaks, ignition and fuelling can affect the readings. Live data and physical checks help confirm the cause. Use the Polo oxygen-sensor or ECU guide for the relevant investigation rather than replacing parts from a code alone.

Do you work on Polo GTI models?

The page covers Polo GTI servicing and repair enquiries as well as other Polo versions. Engine and gearbox combinations differ, so send the year and exact concern before parts or service recommendations are made. Genuine Volkswagen and OEM supplier options can be discussed where available, with the specification and work written on the quote.

When should I call instead of driving over?

Call if the engine overheats, the brakes feel unsafe, a warning tells you to stop or the engine shakes severely with a flashing warning. Stop safely and follow the vehicle instructions. Tell us the year and exact symptom so the next step can be assessed without assuming the car is safe to drive.
