Oxygen sensors measure how much oxygen is left in the exhaust. The engine computer uses that reading to adjust how much fuel it injects, keeping the mixture close to ideal for power, economy and low emissions.
Many petrol Polos use an upstream sensor for mixture control and a downstream sensor to monitor catalyst operation. Sensor count, design and control strategy depend on the fitted engine and emissions system. Heater circuits help sensors reach operating temperature.
Sensors slow down with age and can be poisoned by oil or fuel from a misfire. A failed heater or slow sensor sets a fault code and turns on the engine light. We interpret live data with circuit tests and checks for other engine or exhaust faults before identifying a failed sensor.
Position and fault type matter
An oxygen sensor code does not automatically mean a sensor needs replacement. We match the part to the engine, sensor position and connector before ordering.
