Judder pulling away
Shaking from a standstill, often in first or reverse, usually checked as a clutch or adaptation issue first.
A Volkswagen DSG gearbox can usually be repaired rather than replaced. Our Al Quoz 4 workshop identifies the gearbox code, tests the mechatronic unit, clutches and wiring, then quotes the confirmed repair. Mechatronic work has a guide of AED 3,500 to 6,000, and many faults cost less.

The price depends on what the tests find, from a fluid service to a full gearbox. These guide ranges come from our gearbox and service pages. They are alternatives, not charges to add together.
Gearbox scan, live data and first checks to find the cause.
Specified fluid and filter where fitted, set at the correct temperature.
Seal location and access decide the work involved.
A confirmed hydraulic or solenoid fault inside the control unit.
After testing, with the coding and basic settings the unit needs.
Broad guide for internal damage. A new unit can cost more.
Clutch pack prices depend on the gearbox, so they are quoted per gearbox. Our clutch page lists GTI clutch work at AED 2,500 to 4,500 as a planning guide. The written quote names the parts, their condition, labour, setup, testing and VAT before work starts. Routine service prices for every model are on our Volkswagen service cost page.
These are the complaints we hear most. Each one points to a test path, not a confirmed failed part.

Shaking from a standstill, often in first or reverse, usually checked as a clutch or adaptation issue first.
Harsh or delayed changes in traffic, especially between first, second and third gear.
A flashing PRNDS or gearbox warning means the gearbox has found a fault and may limit gears.
The car will not move in one direction, or several gears are missing.
Engine revs climb without the car speeding up, which can mean clutch slip.
Fluid under the gearbox, whining or grinding need the source found before more damage.
A DSG pre selects the next gear and swaps between two clutches. At low speed in traffic it works hardest, so small problems show up there first.

Jerking alone does not prove the mechatronic has failed. We compare the clutch values, adaptation and fault entries before suggesting any repair. Our VW gearbox problems guide explains how DSG, automatic and manual faults differ.
DSG is a family of gearboxes, not one unit. The code on your VIN decides the clutch type, fluid, parts and repair procedure.
Intervals come from Volkswagen Group trade service data and are given in miles, with rounded kilometre conversions. Your service schedule and market take priority. Our DSG service intervals guide explains each gearbox in detail. For Polo-specific manual, automatic and DSG options, see Polo gearbox repair and replacement.
Send the VIN or the model, year and engine. We confirm the gearbox code and tell you what the symptoms usually point to.
The mechatronic unit combines the gearbox control electronics with the hydraulic valve body. A warning can involve the unit, but it can also come from its supply, wiring, clutches or another gearbox part.

A confirmed electrical or hydraulic fault, such as a solenoid or valve body problem, can often be repaired while keeping the original unit.
A remanufactured unit with defined test evidence can be fitted where one is available. The quote names the supplier, what is included and the exchange terms.
A new unit matched to the gearbox and part revision, with the coding, basic settings and adaptation it needs.
Before any mechatronic is ordered we check the fault entries, supply voltage, earths and connectors, pressure build up and clutch readings. A connector that fits does not prove a replacement unit is compatible.
A DSG has two clutches, one for odd gears and one for even gears. When they wear, the car judders, slips or jerks, and the clutch values in live data show how much life is left.

Used in the DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500, where the clutches run in fluid that cools them.

Used in the DQ200, where the clutches run in air like a manual clutch.
A clutch pack is only replaced after the clutch values and a road test confirm wear. Read our clutch replacement page for the separate manual clutch service.
Yes, in most cases. The finding decides the route. Follow the line from what the tests show to the usual repair.
Every DSG check in our workshop follows the same order, so the cheapest real fix is found first.
Identify the gearbox from the VIN and check its history.
Save gearbox and related module faults with their conditions.
Test battery voltage, earths and connectors to the unit.
Compare clutch values, pressures and gear positions on a road test.
Explain the evidence and the options before any part is ordered.
A generic code reader often cannot see the gearbox control unit, which is why a VW specific scan matters. Our VW diagnostic test guide explains what a full scan includes.
Cover depends on the parts supplied and the work agreed, so it is set out in writing on your quotation rather than as one blanket promise.
Heat, long idling and stop start traffic are hard on any gearbox. These habits reduce wear.
Service a wet clutch DSG on the interval for its gearbox code.
Hold the car on the brake in queues rather than creeping on the clutch.
Use the handbrake on hills instead of holding the car on the throttle.
Use only the fluid specified for your gearbox code.
Book a check as soon as judder or a warning appears.
Keep the battery healthy, as low voltage can upset the gearbox control unit.
Clear answers before you choose a repair.
It depends on the fault. Our guides are AED 2,000 to 4,500 for valve body or solenoid repair, AED 3,500 to 6,000 for mechatronic work and AED 6,000 to 10,000 plus for a rebuild or replacement gearbox. Leak repair is AED 1,500 to 3,000 plus. A diagnosis first finds which one applies, and you approve a written quote.
Yes, in most cases. Clutch adaptation, solenoid or valve body faults, leaks and worn clutch packs are all repairable without a new gearbox. Replacement is usually needed only for internal bearing or gear damage. The tests decide the route, and we explain the evidence before you approve any work.
Our planning guide for mechatronic work is AED 3,500 to 6,000. The final price depends on whether the original unit is repaired, an exchange unit is fitted or a new unit is needed, and on the gearbox code. A new genuine unit or related damage can cost more. The quote includes coding, setup and testing.
Low speed jerking is often caused by clutch adaptation values drifting, a worn clutch, old fluid on a wet DSG or a pressure or sensor fault in the mechatronic. Engine mounts and misfires can feel similar. Clutch values and fault entries are read first, so the cause is found before any part is replaced.
The DQ200 is a seven speed DSG with dry clutches that run in air, used with smaller petrol engines. The DQ250 is a six speed DSG with a wet clutch pack that runs in fluid, used with stronger engines. They use different parts, fluids and procedures, so the gearbox code must be confirmed before repair.
The DQ381 is a seven speed wet clutch DSG found in newer higher output models, such as later Golf GTI, Golf R and Tiguan versions. The same model name can use different gearboxes by engine and year, so the VIN is the reliable way to confirm which DSG your car has before parts are chosen.
Only if the cause is fluid condition or adaptation, which needs diagnosis to confirm. A fluid service is maintenance and cannot repair a worn clutch, a failed mechatronic or damaged gears. If the gearbox already judders or shifts harshly, the faults and clutch values are read first so the right repair is chosen.
A flashing PRNDS means the gearbox has found a fault and may limit gears. If the car still drives normally, drive gently and book a check soon. If it loses drive, slips badly, overheats or leaks fluid, stop safely and arrange recovery. Do not force the selector or keep accelerating to make it move.
Yes. A replacement unit must match the gearbox and part revision, and it needs the required coding, basic settings and adaptation before the car is handed back. We keep the original scan and coding where available, then verify engagement, forward and reverse operation, leaks and returning faults on a road test.
The warranty depends on the part supplied and the work agreed, so it is written on your quotation and invoice. A repaired original, an exchange unit and a new unit can each carry different cover. Ask us to compare them before you approve, and keep the invoice, which records the parts, setup and terms.
Volkswagen Repair Dubai is an independent VW workshop. Tell us the model, year and what the gearbox is doing, and whether Drive and Reverse still work.

How this page was written. Prepared by the Volkswagen Repair Dubai workshop team in Al Quoz 4 and reviewed in October 2026. Prices are the indicative guide ranges published on our own gearbox, clutch and service pages, not fixed tariffs. Gearbox fitment and intervals differ by model, year and market, so the VIN and your service schedule come first. For other transmission work see our Volkswagen gearbox repair page.
