A new-unit model example
The Jetta starter guide lists parts at AED 1,000–1,800 and labour at AED 350–700: AED 1,350–2,500 combined, depending on the chosen unit and access.
One click, slow cranking or a starter that spins without turning the engine? Our Al Quoz 4 VW workshop tests the starting circuit, explains repair and replacement choices, and quotes the work before you approve it.
Typical fitted replacement: AED 800–2,000.
Indicative guide for a conventional starter, including unit and labour. Parts choice and access affect the total.

Price the actual work
The guide below separates a fitted replacement from a component repair. A healthy battery, sound cables and the correct start signal must be established before a new motor is recommended.
Unit + removal and fitting + starting-system checks.
Indicative, vehicle-specific quotation required. The Jetta starter guide lists parts at AED 1,000–1,800 and labour at AED 350–700: AED 1,350–2,500 combined, depending on the chosen unit and access.
A solenoid, brush or drive repair is quoted after the condition and serviceability are checked. Removal, bench work, refitting and final tests must be included when comparing it with replacement.
Engine and gearbox layout, stop-start specification and genuine, aftermarket or exchange supply. Battery, cable, flywheel or control-circuit repairs are additional if a separate fault is found.
Choose the repair that lasts
The cheapest loose part is not always the lowest fitted cost. We compare the whole job and the condition of the existing starter.
Describe the sound, not a diagnosis
These clues help select the checks. Bright dashboard lights or a successful jump start do not, by themselves, identify a healthy battery or a failed starter.
A starter is already turning the engine. Use Volkswagen no-start diagnosis for fuel, ignition, timing or other causes before ordering a motor.
Stop repeated start attempts. If it remains engaged after the engine starts, stop safely and switch off. Burning smells, smoke or hot wiring need assistance, not another attempt to prove it will start.
Find why the motor will not crank
A replacement should follow evidence from the car. A bench test alone cannot rule out a damaged cable, weak battery or missing start command.

Check charge state, battery health, terminals and voltage during the failed start. If supply is weak, establish whether the battery needs replacement or further charging-system investigation.
Measure voltage drop under starting load across the main B+ feed and return path. Inspect cable joints, engine/body earths, corrosion, protective covers and heat-damaged connections.
Check the solenoid control signal, fuses, relay and wiring. If the command is absent, investigate relevant ignition-button/switch inputs, key recognition and brake, clutch or Park/Neutral permission using VW-specific diagnostics.
Relate current draw and cranking speed to supply and engine load. Inspect the solenoid, drive pinion and ring gear where symptoms justify it. Reproduce hot-only or intermittent faults when practical before selecting parts.
Fitment first, then fitting
Golf, Polo, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan and Touareg versions do not all use the same unit. The engine, gearbox and equipment matter more than appearance.

Use model, year, engine code, gearbox and VIN where needed. Check the OE number and valid supersession before selecting an alternative.
Verify rated voltage and output, mounting flange, pinion specification, electrical connections and the appropriate stop-start duty. A similar casing can conceal a different fitment.
A conventional 12V starter, a 48V starter-generator and a hybrid drive system need different parts and procedures. An electric VW READY fault is not a combustion-engine starter replacement.
Isolate the electrical system using the vehicle’s procedure, gain access and protect the main feed. Fit the specified unit with correct mounting, cable routing and terminal torque. Address oil contamination or wiring damage that could harm the replacement.
Check engagement and release, cranking performance, supply connections and relevant fault data. Repeat a warm restart where it relates to the complaint. Explain the fitted part and findings before handover; old parts are returned on request where exchange terms allow.
The Tiguan starter section adds model context. Bring the actual symptoms and part details into the quotation rather than assuming every engine uses the same starter.

HELLA’s starting-system guidanceA typical conventional VW starter replacement is an indicative AED 800–2,000 for the unit and fitting. Engine, gearbox, access and parts choice can move the total outside that band. For example, the published Jetta guide lists AED 1,000–1,800 for the part plus AED 350–700 fitting. Your quote identifies assessment charges, VAT treatment and any additional work.
No. A click can come from the solenoid even when the battery or cables cannot supply enough current. Rapid clicking, dimming lights and slow cranking also need battery and connection checks. We test the starting circuit under load and check the start command before condemning the motor.
Sometimes. A serviceable solenoid, brush set, bush or drive mechanism may justify repair when the housing, armature and other internals remain sound. Heat damage, oil contamination or several worn components can make a tested replacement the better choice. The quote includes removal, bench assessment, repair or exchange conditions and refitting where applicable.
A conventional starter motor is not normally programmed to the immobiliser like a new key. Correct part matching, secure connections and cranking tests remain essential. Guided checks may apply to the vehicle, and battery adaptation is a separate requirement if the battery is also replaced. Starter-generators and hybrid systems need their own procedure.
Where the car uses a conventional starter for automatic stop-start, the replacement must be suitable for the repeated-start duty specified for that version. A similar-looking standard unit is not a substitute. An unavailable stop-start function alone does not prove a failed starter; diagnose the system and verify the engine and equipment specification.
Temperature can expose worn internal starter parts, a solenoid fault or resistance in a cable or connection. The useful test is during the failed hot start, including supply voltage, voltage drop, current draw and the start signal. A hot-start complaint by itself does not establish which part needs replacing.
Once the engine is running, a conventional starter should disengage. Its usual failure prevents cranking or restarting; it does not normally stop an otherwise running engine. Stalling needs a broader diagnosis. If the starter stays engaged, there is grinding after startup, or you see smoke or smell burning, stop safely, switch off and seek assistance.
Assessment, access and availability of the exact unit determine the collection estimate. A repair or exchange can also depend on bench findings and the supplier. We give you the expected timing and applicable parts-and-fitting warranty conditions with the quotation. There is no universal same-day promise or one warranty duration for every starter option.
