The two Amarok generations share a name but very little hardware. Knowing which one you have tells us which parts, fluids and faults apply, so tell us the year and engine when you get in touch.
First generation
Amarok 2010 to 2022
Engines
Petrol and diesel variants include 2.0 TSI, 2.0 TDI, BiTDI and 3.0 V6 TDI. Engine and market specification are checked from the vehicle details.
Gearboxes
6 speed manual or ZF 8 speed automatic.
Drive
Rear drive, selectable 4MOTION with transfer case, or permanent 4MOTION.
Watch for
Timing belt age on 2.0 TDI, timing chain wear on V6 TDI, EGR and DPF on diesels, clutch and dual mass flywheel on manuals.
Second generation
Amarok 2023 onwards
Platform
Developed with Ford and shares its platform with the current Ford Ranger.
Engine and gearbox
Petrol and diesel specifications vary by market. Manual, 6 speed automatic and 10 speed automatic versions exist, so identify the fitted unit first.
Electronics
Driver assist cameras and radar, digital cluster and large touchscreen that need correct calibration after repairs.
Watch for
Software updates, 10 speed fluid condition, battery health in summer heat and sensor calibration after windscreen or bumper work.
Not sure which engine you have? Send a photo of the registration card or the VIN and we will confirm the engine and gearbox code before quoting.
Amarok services we carry out
Pick the job you need. Each guide explains the symptoms, the work involved and how we price it for the Amarok.
Towing, sand driving and daily loads change which checks matter most. Tell us how the truck is used so the estimate covers its drivetrain, cooling and chassis, rather than just an oil change.
Mostly road use
Check the service record, fluid leaks, battery health and brake wear. A warning light still needs diagnosis even if the truck drives normally.
Regular towing or heavy loads
Ask for gearbox and differential checks, cooling-system inspection, rear spring condition and brake measurements. A slipping gearbox or overheating needs attention before the next loaded trip.
Sand or off-road use
Inspect the intake filter, radiator airflow, underbody, driveshaft boots and fluid leaks. Identify the fitted 4MOTION system before choosing transfer-case or differential work.
An original Amarok with an 8 speed automatic and a newer truck with its own specified transmission need different fluids and procedures. A gearbox service is maintenance, it cannot repair worn internals. For slipping, harsh engagement or a warning, ask for diagnosis first.
What can cause these Amarok symptoms?
Heat, sand, towing and short city trips all leave their mark on a pickup. These are faults to consider during diagnosis, what you notice first, and what we check before recommending parts.
Diesel
EGR valve and DPF blockage
Rough idle, limp mode or the glow plug and engine lights together. Repeated short trips can interrupt regeneration; pressure data and the cause of soot loading need checking.
We check soot load, differential pressure and EGR operation with live data before cleaning or replacing.Diesel
Injector leaks
Hard starting, smoke, a diesel smell in the cab or fuel in the oil on TDI engines.
We check injector correction values and return flow, then test before quoting injectors.V6 TDI
Timing chain wear
A rattle on cold start or a camshaft correlation fault code on 3.0 V6 TDI trucks.
We check cam and crank correlation readings and listen at start up before any strip down.
All engines
Water pump and coolant loss
Low coolant warning, a sweet smell or the gauge climbing in traffic during summer.
We check the cooling system with a pressure test of the system, pump, thermostat housing and hoses. See our coolant leak repair.Manual
Clutch, flywheel and reverse gear
Slipping under load, judder pulling away or difficulty selecting reverse on early manual trucks.
We check clutch bite point, flywheel play and gear linkage before quoting a clutch kit.Load and towing
Rear springs, shocks and brakes
Sagging rear, bouncing over speed bumps or brakes fading after towing a boat or caravan.
We check leaf spring condition, bushes, shock damping and pad and disc wear.
For a deeper symptom list by engine, read our Volkswagen Amarok problems guide. A fault code is a starting point, not proof that a part has failed.
Is it safe to drive? Stop safely for overheating, an oil-pressure warning, unsafe brakes, severe misfire or loss of drive. Call before continuing. For a less urgent noise or warning, describe the symptoms so the right inspection can be arranged. A web page cannot confirm that a particular car is safe.
Amarok belts and battery explained
Belt replacement and battery testing solve different problems. Check the engine application, symptoms and included work before comparing prices.
2.0 TDI and BiTDI engines
Amarok timing belt replacement
The timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshafts in step. On the 2.0 TDI and BiTDI, if it slips or snaps the valves can hit the pistons, and a planned service turns into an engine rebuild.
AED 1,500 to 3,0003 to 5 hoursBelt, tensioner, idlers and water pump
When to change it
Follow the interval for your engine code in the service record. Age, contamination and the specified interval all matter. We inspect the belt and verify the schedule for the engine before recommending replacement. The original 2.0 TSI and 3.0 V6 TDI use timing chains. Newer-generation engines need separate identification.
What the job includes
Inspection first belt, tensioner, idler pulleys and water pump checked for wear and leaks.
Locking the timing crankshaft and camshafts locked with the correct tools before the old belt comes off.
Full kit new belt, tensioner and idlers, plus the water pump because the same belt drives it.
Setting and checks tension set to specification, engine turned by hand, then a diagnostic scan and road test.
Replacing only the belt saves little. If the old tensioner or pump fails later, you pay the same labour twice.
Timing-belt kit with pump, tensioner and idler pulleys.
All Amarok engines
Amarok serpentine belt replacement
The auxiliary belt drives equipment that varies by engine, including the alternator. We identify the belt layout and check the tensioner and pulleys before quoting. A failed belt needs a safe stop and assessment before further driving.
AED 400 to 1,50045 minutes to 2 hoursUsually same day
Signs it needs changing
Squeal at start up or when the AC switches on.
Battery or charging warning on the dashboard.
Heavy steering on trucks with a belt driven pump, or a rising temperature gauge.
Cracks, fraying or glazing on the ribs during a visual check.
How we price it
A belt alone is usually AED 400 to 800 fitted. If the tensioner damper or an idler pulley is noisy or wobbling, replacing it with the belt takes the total up to about AED 1,500. We show you the worn part before you approve it.
Auxiliary-belt checks include the belt, tensioner and pulleys.
Petrol, diesel and 2023+ trucks
Amarok battery replacement
Heat, usage, battery age and charging condition affect battery health. Slow cranking, start stop that stops working or a cluster of warning lights after the truck sits in the sun are the usual first signs.

How we replace it
Test first battery, terminals and alternator output, because a loose clamp or weak alternator can look like a dead battery.
Right size matched to the amp hour and cold cranking rating the truck needs.
Settings kept a memory saver protects radio, windows and other settings while the battery is out.
Registered on trucks with battery management, the new battery is registered so it charges correctly.
Battery health is checked alongside charging and connections.
Amarok service schedule for UAE conditions
Start with the schedule for the exact engine, gearbox and market. Discuss towing, sand driving, loads and extended idling when choosing the checks and reviewing what is due.
What to plan and when
1
Every service
Engine oil and filter to the correct VW or manufacturer approval, fluid levels, brakes, tyres, battery test and a diagnostic scan.
2
Other scheduled items
Air and cabin filters, fuel filter on diesels, brake fluid by time, and a check of driveshafts, springs and underbody after off road use.
3
By engine and gearbox
Timing-drive requirements by engine code, plus the specified gearbox, transfer-case and differential maintenance for the fitted drivetrain.
Intervals vary by engine, market and model year. We check your service record and the truck's own service display before recommending work.
Why Amarok owners choose us
An Amarok is a work truck and a family car at the same time, so downtime matters. We diagnose first, explain the options in plain words and only replace what the evidence supports.

Workshop in Al Quoz 4, open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 7 pm
Updated October 2026.Independent Volkswagen workshop in Al Quoz 4. Recommendations depend on the vehicle specification.
Which parts and repair option?
Choose compatible genuine Volkswagen or suitable OEM-supplier parts where available, with the brand and scope named on your quote. The right choice depends on the actual component, specification and supply, not only the badge on the box.
Genuine Volkswagen
Parts supplied through Volkswagen's parts channel. We match the application and quote availability. A genuine part still needs correct diagnosis, fitting and any required setup. Ask which parts and labour terms apply to the actual repair.
Suitable OEM supplier
A compatible part from a relevant equipment supplier can be an option where the specification is suitable. OEM supplier does not mean every item is identical to the genuine part. The quote names the proposed product so you can choose with clear information.
A repairable component should not be replaced just because a fault code names its circuit. For engine or gearbox work, ask whether a targeted repair, rebuild or compatible replacement is justified. For a larger Amarok estimate, name the unit condition, fitted items, fluids, setup and tests. Ask for the warranty terms in writing. Old parts are returned on request.
Contact starts an enquiry. The repair and collection time are agreed after the vehicle and work scope are checked.
Describe the truck and use
Send the year, engine, mileage and warning. Mention towing, sand driving and whether the fault appears only under load.
Identify the cause
Confirm the engine and gearbox, then use relevant fault data and physical checks to distinguish maintenance from a current repair.
Approve the fitted work
Review compatible parts, labour, fluids, any setup and the expected timeline. Additional work needs separate approval.
Check and collect
Check the repaired function and relevant road behaviour. Keep the invoice and discuss any load-related maintenance still due.
If your car has manufacturer warranty cover, a service plan or a possible recall, check with the authorised Volkswagen dealer before paying for related work. We are an independent workshop. We do not represent an enquiry here as a recall check or a confirmed warranty claim.
Amarok questions
Straight answers before you book your Amarok in.
How much does Amarok servicing cost in Dubai?
The guide is AED 450 to 950 for a minor service and AED 900 to 1,800 for a major service. The engine, oil quantity, filters and scheduled items affect the total. These are maintenance budgets, not engine or gearbox repair prices. Send the year, mileage and last-service details for an itemised written quote.
When should I service an Amarok used for towing?
Use the maintenance schedule for the exact engine, gearbox and market, then discuss how towing and load affect the checks. Bring the service record and describe trailer use, sand driving and prolonged idling. Cooling, brakes, tyres and drivetrain fluids deserve attention, but towing alone does not establish that every component needs replacing.
Do all newer Amaroks use a 10 speed automatic?
No. Second-generation Amarok transmissions vary by engine and market, with manual, 6 speed automatic and 10 speed automatic applications. The newer truck also differs substantially from the original Amarok. Send the year and engine details so the gearbox code, fluid specification, diagnostic access and parts availability can be checked before work is agreed.
Why does my Amarok lose power or enter limp mode?
Limp mode identifies a restricted operating state, not one failed part. On a diesel, checks may involve boost leaks, EGR operation, DPF pressure information or fuel delivery. Petrol faults need their own diagnosis. Record the warning and when power drops. Stop safely if there is overheating, an oil-pressure warning or loss of drive.
Does my Amarok need a timing belt or chain?
Identify the engine before selecting timing work. The first-generation 2.0 TDI and BiTDI applications discussed here use a belt, while the original 2.0 TSI and 3.0 V6 TDI use chains. Newer engines need separate identification. Belt due dates come from the applicable schedule; a rattle or correlation code needs diagnosis before a kit is ordered.
Should the water pump be changed with the timing belt?
On an applicable first-generation 2.0 TDI, pump and belt access overlap, so replacing due or leaking components together can avoid repeated labour. A recently replaced, documented pump does not automatically need renewing. The quote should name the belt, tensioner, idlers, pump and coolant, and distinguish shared labour from any additional repair.
Can I drive with a broken auxiliary belt?
Stop safely and call before continuing. Depending on the engine, a broken auxiliary belt can interrupt charging or other driven equipment. Warning messages, steering behaviour and temperature matter when arranging the next step. Avoid another test drive to see whether the problem clears, and leave belt, pulley and tensioner inspection to the workshop.
Which battery should be fitted to my Amarok?
Match the battery technology, dimensions and capacity to the truck and its charging system. The guides are AED 350 to 600 for standard, AED 500 to 900 for EFB and AED 700 to 1,200 for AGM applications. Test charging and connections first, then include registration where the vehicle requires it.
Does difficult reverse selection mean a new gearbox?
Not necessarily. On a manual Amarok, linkage adjustment, clutch release, hydraulics and internal gearbox condition can cause different engagement problems. Describe whether reverse is difficult with the engine running, whether other gears are affected and whether the clutch slips. Diagnosis should establish the cause before comparing a smaller repair with gearbox removal or replacement.
How do I book and plan the time off the road?
Call 056 464 6081 or WhatsApp the year, engine and problem to the Al Quoz 4 workshop. Mention towing or work commitments when discussing an appointment. Routine servicing is usually completed the same day once agreed; fault investigation and parts-dependent repairs need their own estimate. Confirm the inspection appointment and repair completion date separately.
