Alignment, balancing or rotation?

Three different services address different problems. A vibration does not automatically mean all three are needed.

Where the wheels point

Wheel alignment

Measures the relationship between the wheels and the vehicle, then corrects permitted suspension/steering angles to the applicable VW specification. Often called wheel tracking. Relevant to uneven wear, an off-centre steering wheel or a persistent pull.

How each assembly rotates

Wheel balancing

Checks the wheel-and-tyre assembly for uneven weight distribution and corrects it with appropriate balance weights. Relevant to speed-related vibration. Bent rims, tyre defects and mounting problems need investigation if balancing alone does not resolve it.

Which position each tyre occupies

Tyre rotation

Moves compatible wheel/tyre assemblies between approved positions to manage wear. The pattern follows the fitted tyres and vehicle guidance. Rotation changes neither geometry nor balance, and cannot make a damaged or excessively worn tyre serviceable.

What has changed in the drive?

Describe the behaviour rather than guessing the repair. These clues help us choose the inspection.

Pulling or an off-centre wheel

A persistent pull or crooked steering wheel merits a geometry check. Tyre pressures, tyre condition and road slope also affect tracking; a pull only when braking needs a brake investigation.

Uneven or feathered tread

One-edge or feathered wear can involve alignment, pressure, tyre damage or worn suspension. Correct the cause before another set wears out; alignment cannot restore lost tread.

Vibration at certain speeds

Balancing, wheel/tyre run-out and tyre damage are checked before blaming alignment. Note the speed and whether vibration is felt through the steering wheel, seat or during braking.

After an impact or repair

Arrange a check after a substantial kerb or pothole strike, or work that changes steering or suspension geometry. New tyres are also a useful opportunity to check existing wear causes.

Severe pull, sudden vibration or visible tyre damage? Stop safely and call for advice. A bulge, exposed cords or rapid pressure loss needs tyre assessment, not a routine alignment appointment.

What your tyre wear and pull are telling you

Tyres record how the wheels have been running. Before you book, look at the tread and note which way the car pulls. It helps us check the right parts first.

Common tyre wear patterns
What you seeLikely cause to check
Inner or outer edge wornCamber or toe out of specification, worn bushes or a bent arm
Feathered tread, smooth one way and rough the otherToe out of specification
Both edges worn, centre fineRunning underinflated, common when pressures drop in summer heat
Centre worn, edges fineRunning overinflated
Patchy or cupped wearWorn dampers or wheel balance, not alignment alone

Alignment cannot restore lost tread. If the pull happens only when braking, see our Volkswagen brake repair page. Tyres already worn to the edge need replacing through our Volkswagen tyre replacement page.

Check first, then adjust

An alignment cannot hold properly if a joint is loose or the tyre is damaged. We explain any fault that must be resolved before the geometry is set.

Tyres
Pressure to the vehicle/load specification, tread wear, size, damage and wheel condition.
Mechanical
Tie rods, ball joints, bushes, bearings, springs and dampers checked as the complaint requires.
Setup
Correct VW variant, ride height and specified loading/setup conditions.
Geometry
Measure front and rear relationships; adjust the available points to the proper procedure.
Finish
Steering centring, required electronic procedures and a safe road check appropriate to the job.

Worn components need their own repair. A loose or damaged arm may need control arm replacement before alignment. For multiple worn parts or ride-height faults, see our Volkswagen suspension repair service.

Your wheel alignment readings

The aim is the correct specification for your car, not to make every wheel perfectly vertical or every number zero.

Toe

The direction each wheel points relative to the vehicle centre line. Individual and total toe help explain tyre scrub and steering position. The front settings also need the correct relationship to the rear axle.

Camber

The inward or outward lean of the wheel viewed from the front. A specified amount can be normal. Excessive or unequal readings prompt checks of ride height, wear and damage, as well as available adjustment.

Caster

The steering-axis angle viewed from the side. It influences directional stability and steering return. Adjustment is design-dependent; an abnormal reading may need further mechanical diagnosis instead of a routine setting change.

Rear thrust angle matters too. It describes the direction the rear axle geometry steers the car relative to its centre line. Measuring four wheels is different from having four adjustable wheels. Some axle designs have limited adjustment; bent parts are not corrected by a screen setting.

Wheel vibration checks

A wheel can be aligned and still vibrate. We separate balance problems from wheel damage, tyre defects and other mechanical causes.

  • Start with the assembly: tyre seating, rim condition, missing weights and wheel mounting can affect the result.
  • Balance correctly: the wheel is centred on the machine, measured and corrected with suitable weights, then rechecked.
  • If vibration remains: assess run-out, tyre condition and relevant mechanical causes. Specialist loaded/road-force testing may be useful; availability is agreed for the job.

Unsafe tread or tyre damage needs a different solution. Our tyre replacement service covers suitable replacement options.

Match the setup to the car

Golf/GTI, Polo, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, Touareg and commercial variants do not share one alignment setting. Model year, suspension design and fitted equipment determine the procedure.

Ride height
Air suspension and modified springs/coilovers need the correct settled height and setup. Do not align around an unresolved sagging corner.
Wheel fitment
Wheel size/offset, tyre size and front/rear differences affect clearance and rotation choices.
4MOTION / ID.
Use the applicable axle, tyre and setup requirements; the drivetrain name alone does not identify all settings.
Electronics
Steering-angle basic settings and ADAS camera/radar calibration follow the vehicle-specific procedure where required.

Rotate only when compatible

  • Same-size fitments: use a rotation pattern allowed for the tyres, wheels and vehicle.
  • Directional tyres: preserve the marked direction of rotation.
  • Staggered sizes or offsets: front-to-rear swapping may be unsuitable; identify the actual fitment first.
  • After wheel work: set the correct pressures, torque fasteners to specification and perform the applicable tyre-pressure monitoring reset.

Alignment is not calibration. A steering-angle reset does not replace camera/radar calibration, and neither fixes a damaged steering component. Any required additional procedure is identified and quoted separately.

Understand the result before collection

Review the before-and-after readings with the technician. A useful result explains the settings, remaining limitations and how the car behaves, not just the colour of a box.

Readings
Correct vehicle specification, measured values, permitted tolerances and adjustments made.
Limitations
Any remaining out-of-range angle, seized adjuster or part that needs separate attention.
Road feel
Steering centring and tracking checked when safe; persistent pull or vibration investigated further.

A clear repair decision

If a bush, joint or other part needs replacement, our workshop offers genuine Volkswagen and suitable OEM options. The part, labour and follow-up geometry work belong in the quote before approval.

Before any work starts you get the fault codes, the likely cause and a written quote. Old parts are shown to you at handover.

Keep the readings and invoice. Report a recurring pull, vibration or unusual wear promptly; alignment cannot restore tread already lost or prevent a later impact from changing the settings.

Wheel alignment questions

Practical answers before you arrange a check.

How much does Volkswagen wheel alignment cost in Dubai?

Our existing model-based planning guides span AED 150 to 280 for front alignment and AED 250 to 450 for four-wheel alignment across the listed hatchback, saloon, SUV and van groups. They are indicative ranges, not a fixed price for every VW. The quote identifies the measured/adjusted axles, balancing if requested, required repairs or calibration, and VAT treatment before work starts.

Do I need alignment, balancing or both?

Alignment corrects wheel geometry; balancing corrects uneven mass in a wheel-and-tyre assembly. Pulling, off-centre steering and uneven wear suggest checking alignment. Speed-related vibration suggests checking balance, tyre condition and wheel run-out. Both can be needed, but inspection determines the work rather than automatically selling a combined package.

Does a four-wheel alignment mean every angle is adjustable?

No. All four wheels can be measured to understand the relationship between the axles, but adjustment points differ by model and suspension design. Front/rear toe, camber and caster are corrected only where the approved procedure permits. A remaining out-of-range angle can require a mechanical investigation rather than forcing an adjustment.

How long should I allow for the appointment?

A straightforward alignment is usually a short workshop visit. Our existing Beetle guide allows roughly 45 to 60 minutes for alignment, as a model-specific planning reference. Your slot depends on setup, seized adjusters, worn components and any required electronic procedures. Balancing, repairs or calibration can extend the visit; the job time is agreed after inspection.

Should I align the wheels after replacing tyres?

New tyres need balancing when mounted. Alignment is a separate check, particularly useful if the old tyres wore unevenly, the vehicle pulls, or geometry-affecting repairs were done. Alignment does not mean every new-tyre installation needs additional suspension parts. Tyre condition and measured geometry determine the recommendation.

Can you align a lowered VW, a 4MOTION model or an ID.4?

Tell us the exact model, year, wheel/tyre sizes and any suspension changes before booking. Lowering springs, coilovers, air suspension and non-standard wheels can affect setup, clearance and adjustment limits. 4MOTION, ID. and commercial variants need their own specifications. We establish the appropriate procedure and any equipment limitations before agreeing the work.

Will alignment clear an EPS, ESC or lane-assist warning?

Not necessarily. Mechanical alignment, steering-angle sensor basic settings and camera/radar calibration are distinct tasks. The vehicle-specific procedure determines whether a reset or calibration is required after geometry work. Existing warnings need appropriate diagnosis; simply resetting a warning is not proof that a fault or calibration problem has been resolved.

How often should alignment or tyre rotation be done?

Use your VW maintenance information and tyre guidance rather than one mileage interval for every model. Check sooner for pulling, uneven wear, an impact or relevant steering/suspension work. Rotation also depends on tyre direction, wheel sizes and offsets; staggered fitments cannot automatically be moved front to rear. Rotation does not correct alignment or restore worn tread.

What if the car still pulls after an alignment?

Return with the report and explain when the pull occurs. Tyre-related pull, pressure differences, brake drag, worn joints, ride-height issues or impact damage can remain even when measured angles are within tolerance. A safe road test and further checks help separate these causes. Do not continue driving with severe instability or visible tyre damage.
