In this guide
VW DSG service intervals depend on the gearbox code, not just the model. Volkswagen trade service data lists a fluid change every 40,000 miles, about 64,000 km, for the wet clutch DQ250 and DQ500, every 80,000 miles, about 129,000 km, for the wet clutch DQ381, and no service interval for the dry clutch DQ200. Your VIN identifies the gearbox, and the service schedule for your car and market comes first.

Key takeaways
- DSG is a family of gearboxes. The DQ200, DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500 have different service needs.
- Wet clutch DSGs run their clutches in fluid that is changed on a schedule. The dry clutch DQ200 has no listed service interval.
- The gearbox code on your VIN decides the fluid, the filter and the procedure.
- A DSG service is maintenance. It cannot repair a worn clutch, a failed mechatronic unit or damaged gears.
- Heavy traffic and heat are hard on any gearbox, so fluid condition and service history matter in Dubai.
- Only the specified DSG fluid should be used, filled at the correct temperature with diagnostic equipment.
Which DSG gearbox does your VW have?
Volkswagen uses several DSG gearboxes. Each has a code, and that code decides how the gearbox is serviced.
| Gearbox | Clutch type | Gears | Where it is often found |
|---|---|---|---|
| DQ200 | Dry clutch | 7 speed | Smaller petrol engines in models such as the Polo, Golf and Jetta |
| DQ250 | Wet clutch | 6 speed | Stronger petrol and diesel engines in earlier Golf GTI, Passat and Tiguan models |
| DQ381 | Wet clutch | 7 speed | Newer higher output models such as later GTI, Golf R and Tiguan versions |
| DQ500 | Wet clutch | 7 speed | Higher torque and commercial applications |
Model names alone are not enough, because the same model can use different gearboxes by engine and year. The VIN shows the exact gearbox fitted. Our VW gearbox problems guide explains the difference between DSG, automatic and manual faults.
What are the VW DSG service intervals?
These intervals come from Volkswagen Group trade service data. They are a guide, and the schedule in your service book or for your market takes priority.
DQ200, 7 speed dry
No service interval listed. The clutches run dry, so there is no clutch fluid to change on a schedule.
DQ250, 6 speed wet
Fluid and filter every 40,000 miles, about 64,000 km.
DQ381, 7 speed wet
Fluid every 80,000 miles, about 129,000 km.
DQ500, 7 speed wet
Fluid every 40,000 miles, about 64,000 km.
Volkswagen trade data gives these figures in miles. The kilometre figures are rounded conversions. Hybrid models with the DQ400 gearbox also have a listed interval, but work on hybrids needs high voltage trained technicians.

Why do wet and dry DSGs need different care?
The main difference is where the clutches sit. In a wet clutch DSG they run in fluid that cools and lubricates them. In the dry DQ200 they run in air, like a manual clutch.
- Wet clutch fluid wears as it cools the clutches, so it is changed on a schedule.
- Some wet units also have a filter that is changed with the fluid.
- The dry DQ200 has no scheduled clutch fluid change in the listed data.
- Dry clutches are more sensitive to creeping and slow stop start driving.
- Each gearbox uses its own specified fluid, which is not interchangeable.
No scheduled change does not mean no checks. Leaks, warnings or changes in how the gearbox drives always need a look.

What does a DSG service include?
A DSG service is more than draining and refilling. The procedure for your gearbox code sets each step.
-
Identify the unit
Confirm the gearbox code from the VIN and check the service history.
-
Read the gearbox
Read faults and check temperature and clutch values with diagnostics.
-
Drain and renew
Drain the fluid and change the filter where the gearbox has one.
-
Fill correctly
Refill with the specified fluid and set the level at the right temperature.
-
Check and adapt
Check for leaks, carry out adaptation where required and road test.
The level on many DSGs is set with the engine running at a specific fluid temperature read from the control unit. That is why the service needs diagnostic equipment, not just a drain plug and a funnel.
Not sure when your DSG was last serviced? Send us your model, year and mileage, and we will tell you which gearbox you have and what it needs.
Does Dubai driving change the DSG schedule?
Volkswagen does not publish a separate Dubai schedule in the data above. Local conditions still affect how hard the gearbox works, which is why history and fluid condition matter.
- Stop start traffic
- Frequent pulling away and creeping in queues works the clutches harder than steady driving.
- High temperatures
- Hot weather and long idling with the AC on raise gearbox temperatures.
- Towing and heavy loads
- Extra weight increases clutch and fluid load, especially on climbs.
- Unknown history
- On a used car with no records, the last service is unknown, so a check is sensible.
If your car is driven mostly in heavy traffic or tows, ask us to check the fluid condition and service history at your next main service. We follow the schedule for your gearbox and explain any reason to act sooner.

What can a DSG service not fix?
A fluid change is maintenance. It keeps a healthy gearbox in good condition, but it cannot reverse wear that has already happened.
On schedule maintenance
Fresh fluid and a new filter where fitted protect clutches and gears on a healthy gearbox.
New symptoms
Judder, harsh shifts or a warning need fault reading and tests before any service is assumed to help.
Wear or failure
A worn clutch, a failed mechatronic unit or damaged gears need repair, not a fluid change.

Each DSG uses its own specified fluid. Using a general automatic fluid or the wrong DSG fluid can affect clutch behaviour and the mechatronic unit. Always check that the fluid matches your gearbox code.
Which signs mean your DSG needs more than a service?
These signs point to a fault rather than a due service. They need diagnosis first.
- 1Judder
Shaking when pulling away, often in first or reverse.
- 2Harsh shifts
Jerky or delayed changes, especially when hot.
- 3Warning
A gearbox warning or flashing gear display.
- 4Limp mode
Limited gears or no drive, which needs prompt help.
Our mechatronic replacement page and clutch replacement page cover the repairs behind these symptoms.

How much does DSG service and repair cost in Dubai?
A DSG service is quoted for your gearbox code, because the fluid quantity, filter and procedure differ. Repairs are priced on the confirmed fault. These repair guide ranges come from our gearbox service page and are alternatives, not one bill.
| Work | Guide range | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| DSG fluid service | Quoted per gearbox | Scheduled fluid and filter work |
| Gearbox leak repair | AED 1,500 to 3,000 plus | Seal location and access affect the work |
| Valve body or solenoid repair | AED 2,000 to 4,500 | Confirmed hydraulic or solenoid fault |
| Mechatronic work | AED 3,500 to 6,000 | Repair or replacement after testing |
| Rebuild or replacement | AED 6,000 to 10,000 plus | Broad guide, a replacement unit can cost more |
Indicative guides. Your gearbox code and the findings decide the written quote, which you approve before work starts.
Service your DSG by its code
Our Al Quoz 4 workshop identifies your gearbox from the VIN, reads the gearbox data and services it with the specified fluid and procedure, with a written quote before work.
How do you plan your next DSG service?
Four quick checks tell you whether a DSG service is due and what to ask for.
Code first, then schedule
Find the gearbox code, then follow the interval for that gearbox and your market.
Check the records
Look for the last DSG service in the service book or invoices.
Compare the distance
Compare your mileage since the last service with the interval for your gearbox.
Report any change
Mention judder, harsh shifts or warnings, as they need diagnosis first.
DSG service mistakes we see
The same model can use different gearboxes.
Each DSG has its own specified fluid.
The level is set at a specific temperature.
A service cannot repair a worn clutch or failed unit.
Where a filter is fitted, it is changed with the fluid.
No interval does not mean no checks when symptoms appear.
Quick answers about VW DSG service
How often should a DSG be serviced? It depends on the gearbox code, such as 40,000 miles for the DQ250.
Does the DQ200 need a fluid change? No service interval is listed for its dry clutches.
Will a service stop judder? Not if the clutch or mechatronic unit is worn.
Can any garage do it? It needs the right fluid and diagnostic equipment.
Is DSG fluid the same as engine oil? No. They are separate fluids and services.

Questions about VW DSG service intervals
How often should a VW DSG gearbox be serviced?
It depends on the gearbox code. Volkswagen trade data lists fluid and filter every 40,000 miles, about 64,000 km, for the DQ250, fluid every 40,000 miles for the DQ500, fluid every 80,000 miles for the DQ381 and no service interval for the dry DQ200. Your service schedule and market take priority.
Does the VW DQ200 dry DSG need a fluid change?
No service interval is listed for the DQ200, because its clutches run dry rather than in fluid. That does not mean it never needs attention. Leaks, judder, harsh shifts or a gearbox warning still need diagnosis, as dry clutches can wear, especially with a lot of creeping in traffic.
How do I know which DSG my VW has?
The VIN identifies the gearbox fitted to your car. The model name alone is not enough, because the same model can use different gearboxes depending on the engine and year. Send us your VIN or the model, year and engine, and we will confirm the gearbox code and its service needs.
Should I service my DSG sooner in Dubai?
Volkswagen does not publish a separate Dubai schedule in the data we use. Heavy stop start traffic, high temperatures and towing do work the gearbox harder. We follow the schedule for your gearbox, check fluid condition and history, and explain if there is a reason to act sooner for your use.
Will a DSG service fix judder or harsh shifting?
Only if the cause is related to fluid condition or adaptation, which needs diagnosis to confirm. A service cannot repair a worn clutch, a failed mechatronic unit or damaged gears. If the gearbox already judders or shifts harshly, the faults and clutch values are read first so the right repair is chosen.
What happens if a wet DSG is never serviced?
The fluid that cools and lubricates the clutches wears over time. Leaving it far beyond the interval can affect clutch behaviour and the mechatronic unit. A car with no service record is checked first, because the condition of the gearbox decides whether a service alone is right or other work is needed.
Can any DSG fluid be used?
No. Each DSG gearbox uses its own specified fluid, and they are not interchangeable. Using a general automatic fluid or the wrong DSG fluid can affect clutch behaviour and the mechatronic unit. The fluid is chosen by the gearbox code, and the level is set at the correct temperature with diagnostics.
Is a DSG service the same as an engine oil change?
No. Engine oil and DSG fluid are separate fluids with separate schedules and procedures. A routine oil change does not include the gearbox. Check your service book for both, or send us your model and mileage and we will tell you what each one needs.
How much does DSG repair cost in Dubai?
A DSG fluid service is quoted for your gearbox code. Repair guides are AED 1,500 to 3,000 plus for leak repair, AED 2,000 to 4,500 for valve body or solenoid work, AED 3,500 to 6,000 for mechatronic work and AED 6,000 to 10,000 plus for rebuild or replacement.
