What Do VW Dashboard Warning Lights Mean?

An index of VW dashboard warning lights by colour, which red lights mean stop now, which amber lights mean book a check soon, and the guide for each symbol.

What Do VW Dashboard Warning Lights Mean?
In this guide

VW warning lights follow a colour code. Red means a serious fault, so stop as soon as it is safe and check before driving on. Amber or yellow means a fault that needs a check soon. Green, white and blue lights show that a function is switched on. A flashing engine light means a misfire, so reduce speed and get it checked without delay.

Written by the Volkswagen Repair Dubai workshop team in Al Quoz 4. Reviewed by the technical team, updated October 2026.

Key takeaways

  1. Red lights mean stop safely and check. Coolant, oil pressure, brake, steering and charging warnings in red are not ones to drive on.
  2. Amber lights mean book a check soon. The car may drive normally, but the fault can get worse.
  3. A flashing engine light means more urgency than a steady one, because it signals a misfire.
  4. Use the symbol index below to jump to the light on your dashboard, then open the linked guide or service page for causes and fixes.
  5. Always read the text message in the instrument display, because it explains the warning on your model.
  6. Clearing a warning without finding the cause does not fix the fault. It usually returns.

Which VW warning light is on your dashboard?

This page is our index of Volkswagen dashboard symbols. Pick the colour you can see, then the symbol name, and you will jump to what it means, what to do and the guide or service page that covers the repair. The round shape marks red stop now warnings, the triangle marks amber book soon warnings and the square marks green, white or blue information lights.

What do the colours of VW warning lights mean?

Volkswagen groups its dashboard symbols by colour, so the colour tells you how quickly to act even before you know what the symbol means.

Red

Stop safely and check

A problem or malfunction that should be checked straight away. Pull over when it is safe, switch off and read the message before deciding what to do.

Amber or yellow

Check as soon as possible

A fault or a low level that needs attention soon. Drive carefully, follow the message and book a check.

Green, white or blue

Information only

A function is active, such as main beam, cruise control or Lane Assist. No action is needed unless the system behaves unusually.

On many VWs a warning symbol comes with a text message and sometimes a chime. When a red and an amber light appear together, act on the red one first. A yellow central warning lamp with a text message usually asks you to read the display, because it covers several faults and fluid levels at once.

Which red VW warning lights mean stop driving?

These red warnings point to faults that can damage the engine or affect safety if you keep going. For most of them, stop where it is safe, switch off and check the message. Each row links to the guide or service page that explains the causes and the repair.

  • Coolant temperature or level

The engine is too hot, the coolant level is too low or the cooling system has a fault. In Dubai heat this can turn into engine damage quickly.

Stop, switch off and let it cool. Do not open the cap while hot. Read our VW engine overheating guide and the coolant leak repair page.

  • Oil pressure

Oil pressure is too low to protect the engine. A normal level on the dipstick does not prove the pressure is fine.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off and do not restart to see whether it clears. Arrange recovery. See our engine repair page and the oil leak repair page.

  • Brake system

Low brake fluid or a brake system fault. On cars with an electronic parking brake, a red parking brake symbol can also mean the brake is simply applied.

Check the parking brake first. If the light stays on, stop and get help. If it shows with the ABS light, braking may be affected. See our brake repair page.

  • Steering

A fault in the electric power steering. On some models a flashing steering symbol points to the electronic steering column lock.

Stop safely, as steering may become very heavy. An amber steering symbol is a lesser fault but still needs a check. See our steering repair page.

  • Battery and charging

The alternator is not charging the battery, or the car is switching off electrical loads to save power. The car is running on battery power alone.

Switch off extra loads and drive only to a safe place or a nearby workshop. Read our VW battery problems guide, the alternator replacement page and the battery replacement page.

  • AdBlue, no engine restart

On diesel models with AdBlue, a red warning means there is not enough AdBlue or the system has a fault, and the engine may not restart once it is switched off.

Refill with AdBlue if the level is low. If the warning stays, book a diagnostic check before you switch off far from help. See our engine warning diagnosis page.

If several red and amber warnings appear at the same time after a cold start or a jump start, low voltage can be the shared cause. Our guide to VW electrical problems explains how a weak battery can light up half the dashboard.

Which amber VW warning lights need a prompt check?

Amber warnings usually let you keep driving with care, but each one has its own risk if it is left too long. Each card names the symbol, what it usually means and where to read more.

Check engine light

Steady means an engine control or emissions fault. Flashing means a misfire. Generic codes such as P0300 for a random misfire or P0171 for a lean mixture are common reasons.

Read our engine warning diagnosis page and the engine misfire guide.

EPC light

Electronic Power Control, a fault in the throttle, pedal or engine control system. Power may be reduced, and it often shows with the check engine light.

Read our guide to what the VW EPC light means.

ABS warning

The anti lock function has a fault. Normal braking usually works, but the wheels can lock under hard braking. A wheel speed sensor is a frequent cause.

Read our VW ABS light guide and the ABS module repair page.

ESC and traction control

Steady means ESC is switched off or faulty. Flashing while driving means the system is working to control wheel spin, so ease off.

ESC shares sensors with ABS, so start with our ABS and ESC guide.

Airbag warning

A fault in the airbag or seat belt pretensioner system. The airbags may not work in a crash, so this is not a light to live with.

See our airbag repair and replacement page.

Tyre pressure warning

Steady means one or more tyres has lost pressure. Flashing on many models means a fault in the tyre pressure monitoring system itself.

See our TPMS sensor page and tyre replacement page.

Oil level or oil system

Steady means the oil level is too low. Flashing points to the oil level sensor or the oil system. On some diesels it can warn that the level is too high.

Read our VW oil change interval guide.

Brake pad wear

The pads have reached the wear sensor. Braking still works, but the discs can be damaged if the pads wear down further.

Read our VW brake pad guide.

Gearbox warning

A transmission fault. The car may limit gears or power to protect the gearbox. A flashing gear display often comes with it.

Read our gearbox trouble guide and the DSG repair page.

Exterior light fault

A bulb or lighting unit has failed, fully or partly. This affects how you see and how others see you, including brake lights.

See our headlight and exterior lighting page and the brake lamp fault page.

Amber warnings usually allow careful driving to a workshop, but each one needs checking.

Which warning lights are specific to VW diesels?

TDI diesel models such as the Amarok, Crafter, Transporter and older Golf and Passat diesels have their own warnings linked to the glow plugs and the exhaust treatment system. We do not have a separate guide for each of these yet, so each one links to the closest service page.

The rule

Diesel warnings protect the exhaust system

Leaving them too long can lead to reduced power, a car that will not restart and more costly repairs.

Glow plug

Coil symbol

Lights briefly while the engine preheats before a cold start. Flashing or staying on while driving points to an engine control fault. If the engine will not start, see our VW will not start page, otherwise our engine warning diagnosis page.

Particulate filter

DPF warning

The filter is loaded with soot and needs to regenerate. The owner manual usually describes a steady drive at speed. If it keeps returning, book our engine warning diagnosis.

AdBlue

Level or system warning

Amber asks you to refill the AdBlue tank or reports a system fault. If ignored, it turns red and the engine may not restart. A fault needs our engine warning diagnosis.

Short trips in Dubai traffic can stop the filter from regenerating. If the DPF light keeps returning, the cause needs diagnosis rather than repeated forced regeneration. A sensor fault, a stuck intake flap such as the P2015 fault in our intake manifold flap guide or an injector problem can all make the filter load faster.

Diesel models have extra warnings, such as the particulate filter light.

What do green, white and blue VW lights tell you?

These lights confirm that a function is on or available. They only need action if the system does not behave as expected, or if a related amber warning appears.

Start stop

White or green means start stop is available or the engine has stopped automatically. A crossed out symbol means it is not available at that moment, and a weak battery is one reason we check first. The car usually needs an AGM or EFB battery, see our AGM or EFB battery guide.

Service due

The spanner or service reminder shows that an oil change or inspection is due soon. It is a reminder, not a fault. Book through our Volkswagen service page or the oil change page.

Main beam

Blue means main beam is on or the headlight flasher is in use. Dip it for oncoming traffic. If headlights flicker or fail, see the lighting page.

Cruise and Lane Assist

Green means cruise control, adaptive cruise or Lane Assist is active. Amber versions mean the function is unavailable, often because a camera or radar is blocked. See the sensor and camera page.

Key and immobiliser

A key symbol can mean the key battery is weak, no authorised key was found or the immobiliser is active. If the car will not start, see our key programming page.

Indicators and lights

Green arrows show the turn signals or hazard lights. Green lamps show side lights, dipped beam or fog lights are on. Fast flashing indicators usually point to a failed bulb.

Why does a flashing warning light matter more?

Some VW warning lights can show steady or flashing, and the two can mean different things. A flashing engine light calls for faster action, while some other flashing lights simply show a system at work.

  • Flashing engine light means a misfire that can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Reduce speed and avoid heavy load.
  • Flashing ESC light while driving usually means stability control is working on a slippery surface. Ease off.
  • Steady ESC light means the system is switched off or has a fault.
  • Flashing glow plug light on a diesel can point to an engine management fault.
  • Flashing tyre pressure light usually points to the monitoring system rather than a flat tyre.
  • Flashing oil level warning can point to the oil level sensor. It still needs checking.

If a flashing engine light comes with severe shaking or loss of power, stop safely rather than driving on. Our VW engine misfire guide covers the causes and fixes.

What about VW Beetle dashboard warning lights?

Beetle owners search for their own model, but the Beetle uses the same Volkswagen colour code and most of the same symbols as the Golf it shares parts with. What changes is which lights appear most often on each Beetle generation.

Technician diagnosing a Volkswagen Beetle with a laptop

Beetle warning lights we see most

  • 2012 to 2019 Beetle with the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI and 7 speed DSG, the gearbox warning, a flashing gear display and the check engine light.
  • 2012 to 2019 Beetle with the 2.0 TSI, the coolant warning, check engine and EPC.
  • New Beetle from 1998 to 2010, check engine, EPC, airbag and ABS.
  • Classic air cooled Beetle, the red oil light and the red generator light.

Our VW Beetle dashboard warning lights page explains each of these by engine and year, with Beetle guide prices.

What should you do when a warning light comes on?

A calm, fixed order of steps keeps you safe and gives the workshop the information it needs.

  1. Note the colour

Red means stop safely. Amber means drive carefully and book a check.

  2. Read the message

Read the text in the instrument display. It often names the fault and what to do.

  3. Check how the car drives

Note any shaking, noise, smell, heavy steering, a soft brake pedal or lost power.

  4. Take a photo

Photograph the symbol and the message when parked. Warnings can disappear after a restart.

  5. Get it checked

Call the workshop with the photo, your model and what you noticed.

Not sure what a light on your dashboard means? Send us a photo of the symbol and the message, and we will tell you whether it is safe to drive.

What do traction and driver assistance warnings mean?

Driver assistance warnings usually mean a function is unavailable rather than that the car is unsafe to drive. You remain responsible for driving and braking.

ESC and traction control

Steady means switched off or faulty. Flashing while driving means the system is controlling wheel spin.

Front Assist

The emergency braking function is unavailable or limited, often from a dirty sensor or a fault.

Adaptive cruise control

The function is unavailable. The front radar may be blocked by dirt, damage or poor alignment.

Lane Assist

Green means active. An amber warning means unavailable, sometimes because of the windscreen camera.

After windscreen replacement or front bumper work, assistance cameras and radar may need calibration. Our parking sensor and camera repair page covers camera faults in more detail.

Can you clear a VW warning light yourself?

Some warnings clear on their own once the cause is fixed, such as a loose fuel cap or a tyre filled to the correct pressure. Others store a fault code that only a scan can read and clear.

  1. 1Warning appears

The control unit detects a fault and stores a code.

  2. 2Scan reads the code

The code points to a system, not always to a part.

  3. 3Tests find the cause

Wiring, sensors and components are tested to confirm the fault.

  4. 4Repair then clear

The code is cleared after the repair, then the car is tested.

Do not clear warnings to pass a problem on

Clearing a code without fixing the fault only hides it. Disconnecting the battery to reset warnings can also create new faults and lose settings in other systems. The service reminder is different, it is reset after the service is done.

How much does it cost to check a VW warning light in Dubai?

The first step is diagnosis. The repair cost depends on what the check finds. These are guide ranges from our own service pages, and they are alternatives, not one bill.

Initial diagnostic assessmentReading faults and first checks for an engine, EPC or ABS warningAED 150 to 500
Battery replacementA confirmed failing battery behind a charging or start stop messageAED 400 to 1,200
Alternator replacementA confirmed charging fault behind the red battery lightAED 1,800 to 3,600
Ignition coil workA confirmed coil fault behind a flashing engine lightAED 800 to 1,200
Spark plug setFour to eight plugs on selected enginesAED 400 to 1,500
Small coolant hose or seal repairA confirmed leak behind a coolant warningAED 300 to 800
TPMS sensor replacementA confirmed failed tyre pressure sensorAED 200 to 500
Minor serviceWhen the service reminder is dueAED 400 to 900

Indicative guides from our service pages for selected models. The fault found and your model decide the quote, which you approve before work starts.

Diagnose first

Find out what the light really means

Our Al Quoz 4 workshop reads the fault codes with VW diagnostic equipment, tests the system involved and explains the findings, with a written quote before any repair.

How urgent is each warning?

Read the scale from left to right, from warnings you can book in for to warnings that mean stop now. When unsure, treat it as the higher level.

1LowService or washer reminder

Plan the service or top up when convenient.

2ModerateTyre pressure or pad wear

Check pressures today and book a brake check within days.

3RaisedSteady engine, EPC, ABS, airbag or DPF light

Drive carefully and book a diagnostic check soon.

4HighFlashing engine light

Reduce speed, avoid heavy load and get it checked straight away.

5CriticalRed oil, coolant, brake or steering

Stop safely, switch off and arrange recovery if needed.

A scan reads the stored fault, then tests confirm the cause before any part is replaced.

Warning light mistakes we see

Driving on with a red light

Oil pressure and coolant warnings can damage an engine in minutes.

Waiting for it to go away

A light that goes out after a restart can still have a stored fault.

Guessing from the symbol only

The text message often explains more than the symbol.

Clearing codes without repair

The warning returns and the fault can get worse.

Ignoring an airbag light

The airbags may not deploy in a crash.

Topping up without checking

Low coolant or oil means a leak or consumption to find.

Quick answers about VW warning lights

What does a red light on a VW dashboard mean? A serious fault. Stop safely and check before driving on.

What does an amber light mean? A fault or low level that needs a check soon.

Why is my engine light flashing? A misfire. Reduce speed and get it checked straight away.

Can I drive with the ABS light on? Carefully, as normal braking works, but book a check soon.

What does the spanner light mean? A service is due. It is a reminder, not a fault.

Why did the light go off by itself? The fault may be intermittent and is often still stored.

Key warning light terms explained

These terms appear in owner manuals, warning messages and diagnostic reports.

MIL
Malfunction indicator lamp, the engine shaped light for engine and emissions faults.
EPC
Electronic Power Control, the warning for throttle and engine control faults.
ESC
Electronic Stability Control, which helps keep the car stable when grip is lost.
ABS
Anti lock braking system, which stops the wheels locking under hard braking.
DPF
Diesel particulate filter, which traps soot from the exhaust on diesel models.
AdBlue
A fluid injected into the exhaust of many modern diesels to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
TPMS
Tyre pressure monitoring system, which warns when a tyre loses pressure.
Fault code
A code stored by a control unit that points to the system where a fault was detected.

What we check first on a warning light

Every warning light visit in our Al Quoz 4 workshop starts the same way, so the real cause is found before parts are suggested.

From our workshop

Code, test, then repair

A code is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

  1. We talk through when the light appeared, how the car drove and any recent work.

  2. We read stored and active faults in all relevant control units with VW diagnostics.

  3. We check battery voltage, because low voltage can trigger several warnings at once.

  4. We test the system the code points to, including wiring, sensors and live data.

  5. We explain the confirmed cause and quote the repair, then clear the code and test the car after the work.

What to send before your visit

A few details help us judge how urgent the warning is and what to check first.

  • Model, year and engine
  • A photo of the light and message
  • Whether it is steady or flashing
  • When it first appeared
  • Any shaking, noise or smell
  • Any loss of power or heavy steering
  • Recent service, battery or bodywork
  • Other lights on at the same time

Send them on WhatsApp to 056 464 6081 and a technician will reply.

Questions about VW dashboard warning lights

What do the colours of VW warning lights mean?

Red lights mean a serious problem that should be checked straight away, so stop when it is safe. Amber or yellow lights mean a fault or low level that needs checking soon. Green, white and blue lights show that a function such as cruise control, start stop or main beam is switched on or available.

Can I keep driving with the VW engine light on?

If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually drive carefully to a workshop. If it flashes, there is a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so reduce speed and get it checked straight away. If the engine shakes badly or loses power, stop safely.

What should I do if the red oil pressure light comes on?

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off the engine. Low oil pressure can damage the engine very quickly. Check the oil level only after parking, but a normal level does not prove the pressure is fine. Do not restart to see whether it clears. Arrange recovery to a workshop.

Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?

Normal braking usually still works, but the anti lock function may not, so the wheels can lock under hard braking. Drive carefully, leave more distance and book a check soon. If the red brake warning appears together with the ABS light, stop safely, because the braking system may be affected.

What does the red battery light mean on a VW?

It usually means the alternator is not charging the battery, so the car is running on battery power alone. Switch off extra loads such as the AC and seat heating where possible and get it checked straight away. If the battery runs flat, the engine can stop and steering assistance can be lost.

What does the glow plug light mean on a VW diesel?

The coil shaped glow plug light comes on briefly while a TDI engine preheats before starting, and then goes out. That is normal. If it flashes or stays on while driving, the engine control unit has found a fault, so book a diagnostic check. If the engine also struggles to start, have the glow plugs and sensors tested.

What does the AdBlue warning mean on a VW diesel?

It means the AdBlue level is low or the system has a fault. Refill with the correct AdBlue fluid when the level is low. If the warning is ignored, it can turn red and the car can prevent the engine from restarting once the remaining range runs out. A system fault needs a diagnostic check.

Why is the start stop light crossed out on my VW?

A crossed out start stop symbol means the system is not available at that moment, so the engine will keep running at stops. The car checks conditions such as battery charge before it allows an automatic stop. If start stop never works, or the message appears together with other warnings, have the battery, its type and its coding tested.

Are VW Beetle warning lights the same as other VW models?

Yes, the Beetle uses the same Volkswagen colour code and most of the same symbols, including EPC, ABS, airbag, coolant and the gearbox warning on DSG models. What changes is which faults are common on each generation and engine. Our Beetle dashboard warning lights page lists them by year and engine.

How much does a warning light check cost in Dubai?

Our guide for an initial diagnostic assessment is AED 150 to 500, with the scope and fee confirmed first. The repair cost depends on what the check finds, for example AED 400 to 1,200 for a battery or AED 800 to 1,200 for ignition coil work. You approve a written quote before work starts.
