How the cooling system works on a Polo
The pump, thermostat and radiator work together to control engine temperature.
The thermostat controls flow
As the engine warms up, the thermostat regulates coolant flow to the radiator, helping the engine reach and maintain its operating temperature.
The radiator releases heat
Air passing through the radiator removes heat from the coolant. Cooling fans help when airflow is low, including in slow traffic.
The pump layout depends on the engine
Some Polo pumps use a separate drive belt. Others form part of a pump and thermostat assembly. A timing belt package is not needed on every engine.
A leak or noise needs checking
Seal leaks can leave coolant deposits, while bearing wear may cause whining. Overheating can damage the cylinder head. Never open a hot coolant reservoir.
