Start with how you start the car. A turning key, a dash-slot fob and a start button need different checks. The model year alone does not identify the correct replacement part.
You turn a metal key
The key blade turns in a lock beside the steering wheel.

Match the system before buying a part. European B6/B7/B8 and US-built Passats can have different ignition arrangements in overlapping years. VIN, original market and installed equipment confirm fitment; engine size alone does not.

Three different parts get called the ignition. Replacing the wrong one wastes money, so this is what we check for each.

The electrical part that sends power to the dash, starter and engine computer. Worn contacts cause no crank, flickering power or stalling.

The mechanical lock the key turns. A worn cylinder or key blade makes the key stick or refuse to turn. Replace only the failed serviceable component; a lock cylinder and electrical switch are not automatically a combined job.

If the immobiliser light flashes, the car may not be reading the key chip. Determine whether the fault is in the key, reader or vehicle before ordering a key. Matching or coding depends on the component and installed security system.
