2How it works
How the clutch works on a DSG Tiguan
Old oil loses its friction properties, and the clutches start to grab and release unevenly. That is the classic judder from standstill. Before we talk about new clutches, we check the oil service history, read the clutch adaptation values and live clutch temperatures with VW diagnostic software, and look at how much wear travel each clutch has left. Many cars only need fresh oil, a new filter and a clutch adaptation.
The gearbox has learned to push the clutches further each time and is near its limit, or the clutch slips under load on the road test. Then the gearbox comes out, we fit a new clutch pack, renew the seals and oil, and run the basic settings so the mechatronic relearns the new clutch bite points. Skipping that adaptation is the main reason a new clutch still judders.
Slipping or flaring there is an internal gearbox fault, which we cover on the transmission page. Manual Tiguans are rare imports. On those we fit a clutch kit and check the dual mass flywheel, which is often worn by the time the clutch is.
