Sweet smell in the cabin
Strongest when the fan is on and the climate control is warm or set to defrost.
A sweet smell in the cabin, a windscreen that mists over with the AC on or a damp passenger footwell all point to the heater core behind the dashboard. We confirm the leak with a pressure test before any trim comes off, then flush or replace the core and refill with the correct VW coolant.
Tiguan heater core flush from AED 450, replacement from AED 1,800. Indicative Dubai guide. The final price depends on how much dashboard trim has to come out on your Tiguan.

Tiguan heater core repair is needed when coolant leaks inside the car, giving a sweet smell, a greasy film on the windscreen or a wet passenger footwell. Volkswagen Repair Dubai in Al Quoz 4 pressure tests the system first, then flushes the core from about AED 450 or replaces it from about AED 1,800.
Heater core faults show up in the cabin first, so trust your nose and your windscreen.
Strongest when the fan is on and the climate control is warm or set to defrost.
A misty smear on the inside of the windscreen that comes back after you wipe it.
The tank keeps going down but there is no puddle under the car.
With dual zone climate, a part blocked core gives uneven temperatures left and right.
Damp or sticky carpet means coolant is already reaching the floor and wiring.
Steam on the windscreen that blocks your view is a safety risk on the road.
Enough coolant has been lost for the engine to start running hot.
If you also see coolant outside the car, the heater core may not be the only leak. Our Tiguan coolant leak guide explains how we trace every leak point.
Hot coolant from the engine flows through it, and the blower pushes air across its fins. Most owners think they never use it in the UAE, but that is not true. When you set 22 on the climate control, the system mixes cold air from the AC evaporator with warm air from the heater core to hit that number. Defrost and demist also rely on it.
On the Tiguan the leak usually starts at the crimped plastic end tanks or at the pipe joints where the core meets the heater hoses. Hot coolant turns to vapour in the airflow, which gives the sweet smell and the greasy film on the glass. Bigger leaks drip out of the heater box and soak into the passenger side carpet.
Old or mixed coolant leaves scale and sludge, and the narrow tubes of the core are the first place it settles. The result is weak heat on one side, or a climate system that cannot hold the set temperature in winter mornings. A careful flush often clears this without opening the dashboard, as long as the core is not also leaking.
Coolant is mildly corrosive and the Tiguan has wiring and connectors running under the carpet and along the floor. Damp carpet also grows mould quickly in Dubai humidity, and breathing in coolant vapour is not healthy. Catching it early keeps the repair to a core and a refill rather than a core, carpet drying and electrical repairs.
Most failures come back to coolant condition and heat cycles.
Coolant loses its corrosion protection with age. The thin aluminium tubes in the core are the first to suffer.
Topping up with a non VW coolant can form gel or scale that blocks the core and attacks its seals.
A faulty expansion tank cap or overheating pushes pressure above normal and stresses the plastic end tanks.
Daily short trips in Dubai traffic heat and cool the core again and again, which fatigues the joints.
Sealant poured into the tank can clog the core tubes and leave the heater weak on one side.
The core design is similar across Tiguans, but access and labour change between generations.
We confirm the access route on your exact car before quoting, because options such as heated seats and extra ducting can change the labour time.
We prove the leak first, then choose flush or replacement.
We pressure test the cooling system cold and watch whether pressure drops with no outside leak.
We check the heater box drain, the carpet and the core pipes so we know it is the core and not a hose.
A blocked core is flushed in both directions. A leaking core is removed after careful trim and duct removal.
The new core goes in with new seals, then we refill with VW coolant and bleed out every air pocket.
We dry the carpet, refit trim, run the climate control through every mode and recheck the level the next day if needed.

The right choice depends on whether the core is blocked, leaking or both.
These are the main things that move a Tiguan heater core repair quote up or down.
Plan around AED 450 to 800 for a flush and AED 1,800 to 3,500 for a replacement, including coolant.
Indicative Dubai guides, not fixed tariffs. Your written quote shows the part brand and labour before we start.
These take a few minutes and help us quote faster.
Press the passenger footwell carpet near the centre console. Damp or sticky means coolant is reaching the floor.
Wipe the inside glass with a clean cloth. A greasy smear that comes back points to coolant vapour.
Look at the expansion tank level with the engine cold and note it each morning for a week.
No drips outside while the level drops is a strong hint the coolant is going inside.
A sweet smell inside, a greasy film on the windscreen, a damp passenger footwell and coolant loss with no outside drip are the classic signs.
Yes. The climate control blends heat from the core with AC air to hold your set temperature, and demist uses it too.
For a short time, if the coolant is topped up and the gauge stays normal. Stop if the glass fogs badly or the temperature rises.
On most Tiguans the core slides out of the side of the heater box after console and footwell trim removal. We confirm on your car before quoting.
Usually one day on a Mk1 and one to two days on a Mk2, including refill, bleeding and a full climate test.
No. A flush clears a blocked core, but a leaking core has to be replaced.
Coolant vapour is not something to breathe for long, so do not ignore it. Ventilate the car and book a check.
We do not recommend it. Sealants often block the core and other passages, which makes the proper repair harder.
If the mist is greasy and smells sweet it is usually coolant vapour from the heater core rather than normal humidity.
Yes, once enough coolant is lost. See our Tiguan overheating guide if the gauge is already rising.
We refill with the VW specification coolant for your engine and bleed the system so no air stays in the core.
Yes. If the footwell is wet we dry it and check the connectors under the carpet before handing the car back.
