How the Touareg water pump and thermostat work
The shaft seal starts to weep, which leaves crust at the weep hole and a slowly falling level. Or the bearing wears, which gives a whine, a wobble at the pulley and in time a sudden failure. Plastic impellers and plastic thermostat housings can also crack after years of heat cycles. In Dubai, long periods at high temperature, heavy loads and old coolant speed all of this up, so pumps rarely reach the mileage they might in Europe.
One keeps coolant moving through the heater circuit, and on turbo engines another cools the turbochargers after you switch off. These pumps can seize or leak and set fault codes on their own. That is why we read fault codes and test each pump before quoting, instead of assuming the main pump is always the problem.
A Touareg cooling system is large, with high points where air can hide. Trapped air causes hot spots, false temperature readings and cold air from the heater.
