Know the cost first

How much does a VW pre purchase inspection cost in Dubai?

Our indicative range is AED 300 to 2,000. A short condition check on a small hatchback and a detailed assessment of a 4MOTION SUV are different jobs, so we agree the checks and the price before the car arrives.

The checklist

What does a VW pre purchase inspection check?

The checklist follows the equipment fitted to the car and the access agreed with the seller. The report shows what was checked, what needs attention and anything that could not be assessed.

Engine and cooling

  • Cold start, idle and unusual noise
  • Smoke and visible oil leaks
  • Water pump, thermostat housing and hoses
  • Belts, intake and turbo signs

Gearbox and drivetrain

  • Manual clutch, automatic or DSG behaviour
  • Engagement, hesitation and shift quality
  • Mounts, driveshafts and CV boots
  • 4MOTION parts and records, where fitted

Brakes and suspension

  • Pads, discs, hoses and fluid
  • Parking brake and ABS warnings
  • Bushes, arms, joints and shocks
  • Steering play and wheel bearings

Tyres and wheels

  • Tread depth and uneven wear
  • Damage and tyre date markings
  • Pressures and TPMS warnings
  • Rim damage and repairs

Electronics and cabin

  • VW scan of available control units
  • 12V battery and charging
  • AC, lights, windows, locks and keys
  • Cameras, sensors and warning lamps

Body and underbody

  • Panel gaps, overspray and repair marks
  • Accessible rails, welds and corrosion
  • Water and flood indicators
  • VIN against the documents supplied

A road test is included where the car is safe, legal to drive and the seller allows it. Raised access helps us check leaks and underside damage, and any restriction is written in the report.

What you receive

What does the inspection report look like?

The written report groups the findings by area and gives each one a clear status, so you can see at a glance what is fine, what to watch and what needs work before or after buying.

GoodNo concern found at the time of inspection.
MonitorWear or a minor issue to budget for later.
AttentionA concern to repair or negotiate before buying.

Specialist checks

Why choose a VW specific inspection?

A general check looks at what most cars share. A Volkswagen specific inspection also reads the systems and weak points that only a VW has, which is where the expensive surprises usually hide.

Diagnostics

VW diagnostic software reads the gearbox, ABS, airbag and body units, which a basic code reader often cannot see.

Gearbox

We know how each DSG family should feel and what its clutch values should show on a road test.

Engines

TSI and TDI engines have their own checks, such as cold start noise, cooling leaks and diesel emissions parts.

Costs

Because we repair Volkswagens every day, the report can point to the likely cost of what we find.

Our VW diagnostic test guide explains what a full scan shows and its limits.

Plan the day

How long does a pre purchase inspection take?

The time depends on the checks agreed, the car condition, whether a cold start is possible and how much road testing is allowed. We confirm the expected timing when you book, so you can plan with the seller.

  1. Agree the checks

Tell us the car, the price you are considering and your concerns. We agree the scope and quote.

  2. Arrange access

The seller brings the car to Al Quoz 4, ideally with a cold engine and all the keys.

  3. Inspect and test

We inspect, scan and road test where safe, and record anything that cannot be checked.

  4. Review the report

We go through the findings with you before you decide or pay.

Leave enough time to read and discuss the report before you transfer money or ownership. Deciding in a rush on the same afternoon leaves no time to get a repair quote or negotiate.

Know what to look for

Which issues should a used VW buyer look out for?

These are areas we pay close attention to on used Volkswagens in Dubai. Each one links to the guide that explains it in more detail.

Gearbox

DSG judder or jerks

Low speed judder and harsh shifts are checked on the road test and in the data.

Engine

Cold start rattle

A short rattle can point to timing chain or tensioner wear on some TSI engines.

Leaks

Oil seepage

Fresh residue around gaskets and seals is noted with its likely source.

Cooling

Coolant loss

Dried residue and low levels can point to a pump, housing or hose leak.

Electronics

Recently cleared codes

A scan can show when faults were cleared just before a sale.

History

Gaps in the records

Missing service invoices are flagged, as they change what may be due.

Body

Hidden repairs

Overspray, uneven gaps and fastener marks can show past accident work.

Water

Flood signs

Damp carpets, staining and corroded connectors need investigation.

Underbody access shows leaks, corrosion and repair work that a walk around misses.
Accident and flood checks

Can you check a used VW for accident or flood damage?

We look for physical signs of past damage and repairs. A full accident or mileage history needs official records, so we treat the two together.

Paint and panels
Gaps, overspray, finish and fasteners. Paint depth readings can be added when agreed.
Structure
Accessible rails, mounting points and welds. Alignment measurement needs a separate check.
Water exposure
Dampness, staining, odours and connector corrosion. A clean check cannot rule out every past flood.
Documents
VIN, odometer and invoices are compared, and any mismatch is flagged.
Matched to the car

Are the checks different for each VW model?

Yes. The engine code, gearbox and equipment decide which checks matter, so a Golf, a Tiguan and a Touareg each get a different focus.

TSI and TDI engines

Running quality, cooling and turbo signs, plus DPF, EGR and AdBlue warnings on diesels.

DSG and 4MOTION

Which gearbox is fitted, its service history, and all wheel drive oils and couplings.

Touareg and large SUVs

Air suspension, ride height, transfer case behaviour and panoramic roof water entry.

ID models and hybrids

12V supply, charging parts and warning messages. Battery health testing is agreed separately.

Electric models need an EV specific scope, agreed before booking.
Before the appointment

What should a buyer arrange before the inspection?

A few arrangements make the inspection far more useful. Agree them with the seller before the day.

Seller permissionCold engine on arrivalAll supplied keysService book and invoicesRegistration documentsThe advert and claimed repairsKnown warning lightsAny modifications

Do not pay a non refundable deposit until the seller has agreed to the inspection. If the seller will not allow one, treat that as part of your decision.

Before you go

Which questions should you ask the seller?

The answers help us focus the inspection and show you whether the story matches the car. Write them down and share them with us when you book.

  1. When was it last serviced?Ask for the invoice and the mileage at that service.
  2. Has the DSG fluid been changed? On a wet clutch DSG, the gearbox code decides when it is due.
  3. Any accident or paint work?A clear answer helps us compare what we see with what was said.
  4. Any warning lights recently?Ask whether any fault was cleared before the sale.
  5. Has the car been modified or tuned?Tuning can change wear on the engine, gearbox and clutch.
  6. Why are you selling? The reason can hint at an expensive job that is coming up.
Know the difference

Is a pre purchase inspection the same as an RTA test?

Pre purchase inspection questions

What buyers ask us before they book.

How much is a pre purchase inspection for a VW in Dubai?

Our indicative range is AED 300 to 2,000. The model, engine, gearbox, depth of inspection, underbody access and any specialist tests decide the price. We agree the checks and quote before the car arrives, and repairs, fluid changes, dismantling and third party history reports are separate unless listed.

What is checked in a Volkswagen pre purchase inspection?

We check the engine and cooling, gearbox and drivetrain, brakes, steering and suspension, tyres and wheels, electronics with a VW specific scan, and body and underbody condition, plus a road test where safe and allowed. The written report shows what was checked, what needs attention and anything that could not be assessed.

How long does the inspection take?

It depends on the checks agreed, the condition of the car, cold start access and the road test. We confirm the expected timing when you book. Leave enough time to receive and discuss the report before paying, rather than planning to decide straight after the inspection.

Can you inspect the car at the seller location?

The inspection is arranged at our Al Quoz 4 workshop, where we have raised access and diagnostic equipment. Discuss where the car is and how it will reach us when you enquire. Seller permission, underbody access and a safe road test all affect how much can be assessed.

Will you check the DSG gearbox on a used VW?

Yes. We identify which DSG or automatic is fitted, check engagement, hesitation and shift quality on the road test, read the gearbox data and look for leaks. Wet and dry clutch gearboxes have different service needs, so the service history is checked against the gearbox code rather than the model name.

Does the inspection show accident or flood history?

We look for physical signs such as overspray, uneven panel gaps, weld marks, dampness, staining and corroded connectors. A full accident, ownership, finance or mileage history needs official records. A clean physical check cannot rule out every past repair or flood, so missing history should stay part of your decision.

Is the report the same as an RTA certificate?

No. Our report is a workshop condition assessment for a buyer. The official vehicle test and certificate come from an RTA approved testing centre. Our inspection can flag visible concerns before a test, but it is not a certificate and does not guarantee that the car will pass.

Can you inspect an electric ID model?

Yes, with an EV specific scope that covers the 12V supply, accessible charging parts, warning messages and supported diagnostic data. A standard inspection is not a high voltage battery health certificate, so battery health testing and import compatibility need to be agreed before booking.

What happens if the inspection finds problems?

The report explains each finding and how serious it is, so you can negotiate, ask the seller to fix it or walk away. If you buy the car and want the work done, we quote the repair separately. The inspection does not authorise any repair, and nothing is replaced without your approval.

Does a pre purchase inspection guarantee the car?

No. An inspection records the condition that can be seen and tested at the time. It cannot guarantee future reliability, reveal every hidden defect or act as a warranty. It reduces the risk of a costly surprise and gives you facts to support your decision and negotiation.
