An electric pump inside the fuel tank lifts fuel to the engine at a few bar of pressure. A mechanical high pressure pump bolted to the cylinder head then raises it to well over one hundred bar so the injectors can spray it straight into the cylinders. A weak pump at either stage gives low pressure, but the symptoms and the cost are very different.

2How it works
How the Tiguan fuel system works
On 4Motion Tiguans the tank is shaped like a saddle over the rear driveshaft, so the pump sits on one side and a second sender and a transfer jet draw fuel from the other side. The pump is reached through an access cover under the rear seat, so there is no need to drop the tank in most cases.
When it wears, the engine may start and idle normally but lose power or set pressure codes under hard acceleration. Because the pump runs off the camshaft, we also check the follower and cam lobe when we replace it, since a worn follower can damage a new pump and the camshaft.
With VW diagnostic software we read the requested and actual pressure on the low side and the rail in live data, at idle and during a road test under load. We check the control module, wiring and fuses, and on older cars we look at the fuel filter as well. Only then do we quote for the in tank pump, the module or the high pressure pump.

Hot fuel
Summer fuel tanks get very hot, and hot fuel cools and lubricates the in tank pump less well.
Driving on reserve
Running low often makes the pump work harder and draw in sediment from the bottom of the tank.
Contaminated fuel
Dirt or water in the fuel wears the pump and blocks the strainer and filter.
Control module and wiring faults
Heat and corrosion at the connectors can starve a healthy pump of power.
Cam follower wear
On the engine side a worn roller follower reduces the stroke of the high pressure pump.
