Emissions
Exhaust emissions and visible smoke, including the applicable gas measurements.
Before your Volkswagen goes for the RTA registration renewal test, our Al Quoz 4 workshop runs a pre RTA check. We scan for warning lights such as EPC, ABS and airbag, and check brakes, tyres, lights, glass, leaks and suspension. We do not perform the official test, and every repair is quoted in writing first.

Plan the visit, check the car and keep the official test separate from workshop preparation.
Registration renewal and technical inspection are different requirements. Eligible new private cars can be exempt from inspection for the first three years while their registration is renewed annually.
RTA provides a three-year inspection exemption for qualifying new private cars bought from authorised local dealers. Check the conditions for your vehicle.
Once the exemption ends, technical inspection is normally needed for annual renewal.
A change of ownership requires inspection, including during the first three years.
Imported vehicles, exports, accident repairs and failed tests can involve further inspection requirements. Confirm the correct service with your certified test centre.
Check your vehicle’s requirements through RTA’s vehicle renewal service. Our workshop pre-check does not replace the official test.
The official inspection assesses roadworthiness across the systems below. Your test centre applies the requirements and issues the result; a workshop check helps you identify concerns beforehand.
Exhaust emissions and visible smoke, including the applicable gas measurements.
Brake pads, discs and handbrake efficiency, including the electronic parking brake on newer VWs.
Shock absorbers and the general condition of the suspension.
All front and rear lights, fog lamps, indicators and hazard warning lights.
Tread depth, wear pattern and tyre age.
Cracks or chips in the windshield, wiper operation and washer fluid.
Severe rust, major body damage and sharp protruding edges.
Steering function and a working horn.
On tyre age, the ENOC Tasjeel FAQ says tyres must be three years old or newer to pass, or five years in Sharjah, while other Dubai guides quote under five years. Rules can change, so confirm the current limit with your test centre. The Tasjeel FAQ we read does not cover window tint, so if your VW has aftermarket film, ask the centre about the current rule before you book.
Dubai guides list engine and dashboard warning lights left on as a common reason cars run into trouble at the test. On Volkswagens, four lights cause most of the questions we get before a renewal. A lit light is a symptom, so we read the stored fault codes with VW specific software before anything is replaced.
The EPC light points to the engine management or throttle system. On VWs we often trace it to a brake light switch, a throttle body or a pedal sensor fault, and the car may also lose power.
An ABS or ESC light usually comes from a wheel speed sensor, a damaged sensor ring or wiring near the hub. With ABS off, the brakes still work but without the anti lock function.
A lit airbag light means the system has stored a fault, often a seat connector, a clock spring in the steering wheel or a seat belt pretensioner circuit. The cause must be found, not just the light cleared.
The amber engine symbol covers misfires, oxygen sensor faults, catalytic converter efficiency and leaks in the intake. Many of these also affect the emissions reading at the test.
Clearing codes the day before the test does not fix the fault, and the light usually returns. Our guide to VW dashboard warning lights explains each symbol and colour.
Brakes and tyres are checked at every test, and they are the wear items Dubai traffic and heat use up fastest. Squealing or grinding brake pads are one of the warning signs listed by Dubai guides. These are the three wear points we measure on every Volkswagen before a renewal.

We measure the pad friction material and look for a lip, scoring or blueing on the discs. A pulsing pedal or a pull to one side is checked on the road. Our VW brake pads replacement page covers the work and the electronic parking brake service mode.
Every tyre carries a four digit date code on the sidewall, such as 2322 for week 23 of 2022. We read all four codes plus the spare where fitted, measure tread depth and look for cracks, bulges and uneven wear from alignment.
Handbrake efficiency is part of the test. We check that the electronic or cable handbrake holds, and that brake fluid is at the right level with no leaks at the hoses or calipers.
Yes. Lights, indicators and the windshield are on the published checklists, and they are the quickest items for an inspector to see. They are also some of the simplest faults to fix before the test date.

A single dead side light or number plate lamp is easy to miss from the driver seat. Dubai sun also turns plastic headlight lenses yellow and cloudy, which cuts light output.
For lens restoration, LED or xenon faults, see our VW headlight repair page.

Dubai guides note that even a small crack in the windshield can cause a fail. Stone chips from motorway driving often spread in the heat, especially when the AC cools the glass from inside.
When a chip has become a crack, our VW windshield replacement page explains the options.
Send your Volkswagen model, year, mileage and renewal date. We book a pre RTA check, list what we find and quote any repair in writing before work starts.
A Volkswagen that is a few years old and drives in Dubai heat starts to show the same faults again and again. Emissions problems usually start with a misfire or a tired sensor, and leaks and worn bushes come with age and mileage. These are the generic OBD fault codes we most often read on cars heading for a renewal.
Random or multiple cylinder misfire. On TSI engines this often traces to ignition coils, spark plugs or carbon build up, and a misfire raises emissions.
Misfire on one cylinder. Swapping the coil between cylinders shows whether the fault follows the coil or stays with the cylinder.
Oxygen sensor circuit and heater faults. A slow or failed O2 sensor upsets the fuel mixture and the emissions reading.
System too lean. On VWs we look for vacuum leaks, a cracked PCV breather hose or a failing PCV valve before blaming a sensor.
Catalyst efficiency below threshold. Often the result of a long running misfire, so the misfire is fixed first and the catalytic converter checked after.
Oil leaks, worn suspension bushes and play in ball joints or track rod ends do not store a code. These are found on the lift with a torch and a pry bar.
Our pre RTA check follows the same systems the test centre looks at, plus the Volkswagen faults we know about. You get a written list of what passed our check, what needs attention before the test and what can wait.
All available control modules read with VW specific software, including engine, gearbox, ABS, airbag and body systems.
EPC, ABS, ESC, airbag, check engine, tyre pressure and glow plug lights checked with the ignition on and with the engine running.
Pad and disc wear measured where visible, hoses and calipers checked for leaks, and handbrake hold tested.
Date code, tread depth, sidewall condition and wear pattern on every tyre, with pressures set.
Every exterior bulb, indicator and hazard light tested, and headlight lens condition and aim checked.
Windscreen chips and cracks, wiper blades, washer jets and fluid level.
Idle quality, misfire counters in live data, visible exhaust smoke and exhaust leaks.
Engine oil, coolant, gearbox and brake fluid leaks checked from underneath.
Play in joints, bush condition, shock absorber leaks, horn, visible rust and body damage.
The check records the condition we can see at the time. Anything that needs dismantling, extra tests or parts is listed separately, and repairs only go ahead after you approve the written quote.
No. We are an independent Volkswagen workshop, not a test centre. We do not perform the official RTA test, issue a pass certificate or decide whether a car passes. Our job is to find and fix faults before you go.
The workshop pre-check and the official RTA test are separate services. Agree the inspection scope and price before the car is checked.
Existing guide range for a multi-point Volkswagen condition inspection. Your pre RTA check is quoted for the model and checks agreed.
See the inspection serviceYour quote confirms the checks and any additional diagnostic tests. Ask for the final total and VAT treatment before approval.
Any faults found are quoted in writing. Repairs proceed only after you approve them.
Paid to the certified test centre under its applicable tariff. A workshop inspection does not include an official pass certificate.
Guide range, not a fixed tariff. Buying a car? Our Volkswagen pre-purchase inspection serves a different purpose from a renewal pre-check.
A little planning saves a second trip to the test centre. This is the order we suggest to Volkswagen owners with a renewal coming up.
Note when your registration expires and remember the pass certificate is valid for 30 days, so test close to renewal.
Bring the car a few days before the test so there is time to order parts if anything is found.
Review the written list and quote, then approve only the work you want done before the test.
Book your test at a certified RTA testing centre, with valid insurance and your documents ready.
For renewal, Tasjeel lists an electronic insurance policy valid for at least six months and a technical inspection pass certificate, plus an Emirates ID and other documents depending on the owner.
Most failed tests we hear about start with one of these ideas. Here is what we tell owners instead.
I will clear the warning light before the testClearing a code hides the fault for a short time only. The light often returns on the drive to the centre, and the cause is still there.
The tyres have plenty of tread, so they are fineTread is only half of it. Tyre age is a stated rule, so a tyre with deep tread and an old date code can still be a problem.
A small chip will not matterDubai guides note that even a small crack can cause a fail, and chips spread in the heat. Fixing a chip early is simpler than replacing the glass.
A workshop check means the car will passNo workshop can promise the result. Only the test centre decides, which is why our check is about finding faults, not issuing passes.
Quick answers for Volkswagen owners in Dubai with a renewal coming up.
No. We are an independent Volkswagen workshop in Al Quoz 4, not a test centre. The official test and pass certificate only come from a certified RTA testing centre. Our pre RTA check looks at the same systems and the common VW faults, so you can fix problems before the test instead of after a fail.
Eligible new private cars bought from authorised local dealers can have a three-year technical inspection exemption while registration is renewed annually. After the exemption, inspection is normally required at annual renewal. A change of ownership requires inspection even within the first three years. Check your vehicle’s requirements with RTA.
The pre RTA check is a condition inspection, and our Volkswagen inspection service page publishes an indicative range of AED 200 to 1,500 for that. Your exact price depends on the model and the checks agreed, and it is confirmed in writing first. Any repair is quoted separately. The official test fee is set by RTA and the test centre.
Dubai guides list engine and dashboard warning lights left on as a common reason for problems at the test, and only the centre decides the result. On Volkswagens the EPC light often comes from a brake light switch, throttle body or pedal sensor fault. We read the stored code with VW software and quote the fix before the test.
The ENOC Tasjeel FAQ says tyres must be three years old or newer to pass, or five years in Sharjah, while some Dubai guides quote under five years. Because rules can change, confirm the current limit with your test centre. We read the four digit date code on every tyre during the pre RTA check.
The Tasjeel FAQ states that technical inspection test certificates are valid for 30 days from the date of issue. If the registration or renewal is not completed in that time, the vehicle must be tested again. That is why we suggest booking the pre RTA check a few days before the test, and the test close to your renewal.
The centre gives you a report listing the faults. Tasjeel says a vehicle that fails must be retested within 30 days of the date of the fail. Bring the report to us and we check the listed items, quote the repairs in writing and fix only what you approve, so the car is ready for the retest.
Yes. The test includes an exhaust gas reading, and a misfire such as P0300 or a faulty oxygen sensor upsets the fuel mixture and raises emissions. A long running misfire can also damage the catalytic converter and set P0420. We check misfire counters and sensor data in live data during the pre RTA check.
We look at the glass for chips, cracks and wiper damage, but we do not certify tint levels. The official tint rule is applied by the test centre. If your Volkswagen has aftermarket window film and you are unsure whether it meets the current rule, ask the test centre directly before you book the test.

Volkswagen Repair Dubai is an independent VW workshop, open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 7pm. Send your model, year, mileage and renewal date, and we agree the check and the price in writing before any work.
How this page was written. Prepared by the Volkswagen Repair Dubai workshop team in Al Quoz 4 and reviewed in October 2026. Test rules come from the official sources below, and the common VW fail points come from the faults our technicians see on cars before a renewal. Prices are the guide ranges already published on our inspection service and pre purchase inspection pages. We do not perform the official test, and fees for it are set by RTA and the test centre.
