In this guide
Most VW key fob problems, such as short range, buttons that need several presses or a low key battery message, start with the coin cell battery. Replace it with the same size printed on the old cell, test the buttons, and resync the remote if your owner manual describes it. If the buttons work but the car will not start, or a new key is needed, that is immobiliser programming, which needs a workshop.

Key takeaways
- A weak coin cell is the most common cause of a VW key fob that works only close to the car.
- Use the battery size printed on the old cell. CR2032 is common on VW keys, but not universal.
- Remote locking and permission to start are different functions. A new battery fixes the first, not the second.
- Some remotes need a resync after a battery change. The owner manual for your model shows whether you can do it yourself.
- A new shell fixes a broken case or worn buttons, but not a damaged circuit board.
- New keys, lost keys and start faults need programming with VW diagnostic equipment.
What is your VW key fob doing?
The symptom points to the likely cause. Match what you see before buying a battery, a shell or a new key.
| What you notice | Likely cause | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Works only close to the car | Weak coin cell battery | Replace the battery |
| Needs several presses | Weak battery or worn contacts | Replace the battery, check contacts |
| Low key battery message | The car has detected a weak key battery | Replace the battery |
| One button dead, others work | Worn button pad or switch | Check the pad and switch |
| Buttons work, car will not start | Start recognition or immobiliser fault | Try the spare, then book a check |
| Both keys stopped together | Vehicle side fault or low car battery | Check the car battery, then book a check |

How do you know the key battery is weak?
A Volkswagen technical tip for remote keys lists simple checks that point to a weak coin cell. You can do the first two yourself.
- 1Watch the LED
Press a button. If the small light on the key does not flash, the battery is likely weak.
- 2Read the display
With the ignition on, press a key button and look for a key battery message.
- 3Load test
A workshop measures the cell under load. Volkswagen gives 2.6 volts as the replace point.
- 4Read the car
On newer VWs, a stored fault shows which key reported a low battery.
Shorter range, delayed response and needing several presses are also typical signs. A cell can show a normal voltage with no load and still fail when the button is pressed, which is why the load test matters.
Which VW key do you have?
The opening method and battery position depend on the key generation. Your owner manual shows the exact steps for your car.
Flip key
A metal blade folds out at the press of a button. Found on many Golf, Polo, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan models.
Keyless smart key
Used with Keyless Access and a start button, with a small emergency blade hidden inside the key.
Slot key
Some Passat and CC models use a key that slides into a slot in the dashboard to start.
Not sure?
Send us a photo of your key with the model and year, and we will tell you which type it is.
Not sure which battery your key takes? Send us a photo of the key and your model, and we will tell you the battery and how it opens.
How do you change a VW key fob battery?
A battery change is usually simple. Work on a clean table, and use a covered tool so the plastic is not marked.
-
Release the blade
On many keys, press the release button to fold out or remove the emergency key blade.
-
Open the case
Find the seam and separate the halves gently, using a flat tool wrapped in tape.
-
Note the old cell
Read the size printed on it and note which side faces up before removing it.
-
Fit the new cell
Fit the same size with the same side facing up. Avoid touching the flat faces.
-
Close and test
Snap the case shut, refit the blade and test lock, unlock and the boot button at the car.

CR2032 is common in VW keys, and some keys use other sizes such as CR2025, so always check the old cell. Dispose of old coin cells safely and keep new ones away from children.
Does a VW key need resyncing after a battery change?
A remote can lose its sync with the car after a battery change, especially if the old battery went completely flat. Resyncing the remote is not the same as programming a new key to the immobiliser.
- Check the owner manual for your model, which shows whether a resync is needed and how to do it.
- On many VW models, the manual describes pressing the unlock button, then unlocking the driver door with the key blade within about a minute.
- Try the spare key. If the spare works normally, the car side is likely fine.
- Newer keys may not offer a resync you can do yourself, and need a workshop check.
- If the car will not start, a resync will not help. That is a start recognition or immobiliser issue.

What is the difference between remote sync and key programming?
A VW key does two separate jobs. Knowing which one has failed saves time and money.
Lock and unlock
Uses the battery to send a radio signal. Battery changes and resyncs deal with this function.
Immobiliser
A chip in the key is recognised by the car before it allows the engine to start. This needs programming equipment.
New or lost keys
A new key must be matched to the car and adapted. All keys lost work needs a separate check.
Programming is covered on our Volkswagen key programming page. On older cars with a turning key, a worn lock can also stop starting, which our ignition switch replacement page explains.
What if a keyless VW does not detect the key?
On cars with Keyless Access, a flat key battery can stop the car from detecting the key. The owner manual shows an emergency method for this.
Use the emergency method
Follow the owner manual for opening and starting with a flat key battery.
Emergency blade
The hidden blade unlocks the driver door, often behind a small cap on the handle.
Emergency position
Holding the key at the marked position lets the car read the chip without the battery.
Replace the battery
Fit a new cell soon, and get it checked if the message returns.
Interference from phones, chargers or other electronics near the key can also affect detection. Move them away and try again before assuming a fault. A weak car battery can also cause key detection problems, which our battery replacement service covers.
Can you replace a VW key shell or buttons?
A cracked case, broken blade hinge or worn button pad does not always mean a new key. Where suitable parts are available, the shell or pads can be replaced and the original electronics kept.
If the circuit board is cracked, corroded or has a broken switch, a new case alone will not fix it. Move the board carefully, keep the chip in place, and test every button and the start function after the swap.

A water damaged key should be kept dry and not used until it has been assessed. Corrosion on the board decides whether cleaning, component repair or replacement is practical.
How much does VW key fob repair cost in Dubai?
The cost depends on the work. These guide ranges come from our own service pages and are alternatives, not one bill.

Similar fobs are not always compatible with your car.
All keys lost work is harder and costs more.
Repeated coding will not fix a failed key or reader.
Quick answers about VW key fobs
What battery does a VW key take? Often CR2032, but check the size printed on the old cell.
Do I need programming after a battery change? Usually not for starting. Some remotes need a resync, and some newer keys need a workshop to restore the buttons.
Why does my key work only near the car? The battery is most likely weak.
Can I replace just the shell? Yes, if the board and chip are in good condition.
Why will the car not start with a working remote? Start recognition is separate and needs a check.
Key fob terms explained
These terms come up in owner manuals and key quotes.
- Coin cell
- The small flat battery that powers the remote buttons, such as a CR2032.
- Transponder
- The chip in the key that the car reads before allowing the engine to start.
- Immobiliser
- The security system that blocks starting unless a matched key is recognised.
- Resync
- Restoring the link between the remote buttons and the car, without changing the key chip.
- Keyless Access
- The system that unlocks and starts the car with the key in your pocket.
- Emergency blade
- The metal key inside the fob used to open the door when the battery is flat.
What we check first on a key fob
Every key visit in our Al Quoz 4 workshop starts the same way, so you only pay for the work the key needs.
Battery, buttons, then start
Most key faults are simple once tested.
-
We compare the faulty key with the spare, because that shows whether the key or the car is at fault.
-
We test the coin cell under load and check the contacts and buttons.
-
We check remote locking and start recognition separately at the car.
-
We read the access and immobiliser faults with VW diagnostics where the car side is involved.
-
We explain whether a battery, a shell, a repair or a new key is needed, then test every function before handover.
What to send or bring
A few details help us identify your key and plan the work.
- Model and year
- A photo of the key
- What the key does and does not do
- Whether the spare works
- Any message on the display
- When the problem started
- All remaining keys
- Ownership documents for new keys

Questions about VW key fob problems
What battery does a VW key fob use?
Many VW keys use a CR2032 coin cell, but some use other sizes such as CR2025. The safest way is to open the key and read the size printed on the old cell, then fit the same type with the same side facing up. If unsure, send us a photo of the key and your model.
Does a VW key need programming after a battery change?
Usually not. A battery change does not affect the immobiliser chip, so the car still starts. Some remotes need a simple resync of the buttons, which the owner manual describes for many models. If the buttons still do not work after a resync, or newer keys do not offer one, the key needs a workshop check.
How do I resync my VW remote key?
On many VW models, the owner manual describes pressing the unlock button and then unlocking the driver door with the key blade within about a minute. The exact steps vary by model and year, so follow the manual for your car. Newer keys may need a workshop to restore the remote function.
Why does my VW key only work close to the car?
A weak coin cell is the most common cause. As the battery fades, the signal gets weaker, so the range drops and you may need several presses. Replace the battery first. If the range is still short, the contacts, the key board or the receiver in the car need checking.
My VW key buttons work but the car will not start. Why?
Locking and starting are separate functions. The car reads a chip in the key before it allows the engine to start, and this does not depend on the remote battery. Try the spare key. If neither starts the car, the reader, the immobiliser or another start fault needs diagnosis, not a new battery.
How do I start a keyless VW with a flat key battery?
Use the emergency blade hidden inside the key to unlock the driver door, then follow the owner manual for the emergency start position. Holding the key at the marked position lets the car read the chip without the battery. Replace the coin cell soon afterwards, and get it checked if the message returns.
Can I replace only the VW key shell?
Yes, where a suitable shell is available and the original board and chip are in good condition. Transfer the board and chip carefully and test every button and the start function afterwards. A new shell does not repair a cracked or corroded board, so a damaged board needs repair or a replacement key.
Will a cheaper look alike key work with my VW?
Not always. A replacement must match the generation, market specification, remote frequency and security system of your car. Similar looking fobs are often not compatible. Send your model and year first, as the VIN or existing key details may be needed before the right part is chosen.
How much does VW key fob repair cost in Dubai?
Our guides are AED 50 to 150 for a key battery replacement, AED 150 to 350 for a typical remote fob repair and AED 650 to 1,100 for a compatible replacement smart key with programming when a working key remains. Programming only starts from AED 200, with the key supplied separately.
