In this guide
The right tyre for your Volkswagen is the size, load index and speed rating approved for your exact car, shown on the tyre placard in the door pillar or fuel flap and in the owner manual. Within that specification, choose a quality summer tyre suited to how you drive, check the manufacture date before fitting, and keep the same tyre across each axle.

Key takeaways
- Start from the approved size on the tyre placard, not the badge on the car or the tyres currently fitted.
- Never fit a lower load index or speed rating than your VW specifies. Equal or higher is acceptable.
- XL means extra load. It is not the same as run flat, and the two are not interchangeable.
- In Dubai heat, correct pressure set cold and a recent manufacture date matter as much as the brand.
- Some 4MOTION models need tyres with closely matched rolling size, so replacing one tyre is not always possible.
- New tyres should be balanced on fitting, and alignment checked if the old tyres wore unevenly.
What do the markings on a VW tyre mean?
Every tyre sidewall carries the same type of code. Reading it lets you compare quotes properly and check a replacement matches your car. Here is a typical example broken into its parts.
- 225, width
- The tyre width in millimetres from sidewall to sidewall.
- 45, profile
- The sidewall height as a percentage of the width. Lower numbers mean a shorter sidewall.
- R17, construction and rim
- R means radial construction. 17 is the rim diameter in inches.
- 94, load index
- A code for the maximum load each tyre can carry at the correct pressure. 94 corresponds to 670 kg.
- W, speed rating
- A letter for the maximum speed at that load. V is 240 km per hour, W is 270 km per hour.
- XL, extra load
- A reinforced tyre built to carry more load than a standard tyre of the same size.
Tyre maker Michelin explains load index and speed rating in its guide to tyre load and speed ratings, including why a lower speed rating should not be fitted.
How do you find the right tyre size for your VW?
The same model can leave the factory with several wheel and tyre packages. These steps lead to the approved size for your car.
-
Read the placard
Check the tyre label in the driver door pillar or inside the fuel flap. It lists approved sizes and pressures.
-
Check the manual
The owner manual lists the approved wheel and tyre combinations for your model and engine.
-
Check both axles
Some VWs use different front and rear sizes. Read the marking on a front and a rear tyre.
-
Compare current tyres
If the fitted tyres differ from the placard, the car may have had different wheels fitted before.
-
Confirm with the VIN
When in doubt, the VIN and wheel details confirm the correct specification.

Which tyre types suit which VW models?
Instead of one brand per model, think about what each type of VW needs from its tyres. The approved specification always comes first.
| Model family | What matters most | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Polo and Vento | Comfort, low noise and long tread life in city driving | Correct size and load index, quality summer tyre |
| Golf and Jetta | Balanced grip, comfort and wet braking | Speed rating to match the engine and trim |
| GTI, Golf R and Arteon | High speed stability and dry grip | Required speed rating, often W or Y, and XL where specified |
| Passat and Teramont | Comfort on long highway drives | Load index for a full car, low noise |
| Tiguan and Touareg | Stability, load capacity and SUV handling | SUV rated tyres, load index, 4MOTION matching |
| ID models and e Golf | Load capacity and low rolling resistance | Specified load rating and construction for the EV |
General guidance. The approved specification for your exact car is what counts.

Can you fit a lower load or speed rating?
Load index and speed rating are safety limits, not marketing labels. Here is how changes to them should be treated.
Same as specified
Matching the load index and speed rating on the placard is the normal choice for any replacement.
Higher rating
A higher load index or speed rating can be fitted, but the car is still limited by its own axle loads.
Lower rating
A lower load index or speed rating than your VW requires should not be fitted, even to save money.
The same applies to construction. An XL tyre should replace an XL tyre where the car specifies it, and a run flat tyre needs a vehicle set up for run flat use. XL and run flat are different things.
What matters most for VW tyres in Dubai heat?
Hot roads and high air temperatures raise tyre temperature and pressure, and soften the rubber. Tyres in Dubai wear and age differently from tyres in cooler countries, so a few habits make a big difference.
- Summer tyres suit the UAE climate. Winter tyres are not designed for this heat.
- Correct pressure, set cold using the placard figure, not the maximum on the sidewall.
- A recent date code, because rubber ages even in storage.
- Sidewall checks for cracks and bulges, which heat and kerbs make worse.
Check pressures early in the morning or after the car has been parked in shade. A reading taken after driving in the afternoon will be higher than the cold figure.

How do you compare tyre brands and ranges?
Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Goodyear and Dunlop each make several ranges for different uses. A brand name alone does not tell you whether a tyre suits your car. Compare by what the range is designed for.
Comfort ranges
Designed for quiet, smooth daily driving. A good match for Polo, Golf, Jetta and Passat use.
Performance ranges
Designed for grip and high speed stability. Often specified on GTI, Golf R and Arteon.
SUV ranges
Built for the weight and load of Tiguan, Teramont and Touareg models.
Efficiency ranges
Lower rolling resistance, useful for ID models and owners driving long distances.
Compare the same size, ratings and construction from each brand, then look at noise, wet braking and price. A cheaper tyre in the correct specification is safer than a premium tyre in the wrong one.

How old can a new tyre be?
A tyre can be new and unused but still old. The manufacture date tells you how long it has been ageing.
Check the date before fitting
Ask to see the date code on each tyre before it is fitted, and compare it with the date on your quote.
Four digit code
The last four digits of the DOT code show the week and year. 2526 means week 25 of 2026.
Heat ages rubber
Tyres stored in hot conditions age faster, so recent stock is preferable in the UAE.
Five year point
Dubai guidance and testing commonly treat tyres more than five years past manufacture as due for replacement.
When should you replace your VW tyres?
Tread depth is the clearest sign. Measure at the inner edge, centre and outer edge, then find where your tyres sit on the scale below.
Full grip and water clearance. Check pressure monthly.
Still safe. Watch for uneven wear and plan a replacement budget.
Wet grip drops noticeably. Book replacement soon.
At the limit. Replace now.
Below the UAE minimum or unsafe. Do not drive on it.
If one edge is wearing faster than the rest, read our guide on uneven VW tyre wear to find the cause before buying new tyres.
What happens when VW tyres are fitted properly?
The job does not end when the old tyre comes off. These steps decide how the new tyres ride and how long they last.
- 1Inspect
Check the wheel, valve and sensor for damage before mounting.
- 2Mount
Fit each tyre in the right direction or orientation for its pattern.
- 3Balance
Balance each wheel and tyre to prevent vibration at speed.
- 4Set and reset
Set cold pressures, torque the wheels and complete the TPMS procedure.

Pressure monitoring differs by model. Some VWs use wheel speed data, others use sensors in each wheel. Faulty sensors are covered on our TPMS sensor replacement page, and geometry on our wheel alignment page.
How much do VW tyres cost in Dubai?
Size, construction and brand range drive the price. These guide ranges come from our service pages.
| Work | Guide range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tyre replacement, per tyre | AED 500 to 2,500 | Depends on size, ratings and range |
| Front wheel alignment | AED 150 to 280 | When front tyres wore unevenly |
| Four wheel alignment | AED 250 to 450 | When wear shows on both axles |
Indicative ranges. Compact sizes can cost less, and large SUV or performance tyres can cost more. The written quote names the exact tyre, quantity, fitting work and VAT treatment. Details are on our Volkswagen tyre replacement page.

Tyre buying mistakes we see in Dubai
The fitted tyres may not be the approved size for your car.
Cheaper tyres with a lower rating than specified are unsafe.
An unused tyre can still be several years old.
Different patterns or brands on one axle upset handling.
The number on the tyre is a limit, not the setting for your car.
Unbalanced new tyres vibrate and wear faster at highway speed.
Quick answers about Volkswagen tyres
Where do I find my VW tyre size? On the tyre placard in the driver door pillar or fuel flap, and in the owner manual.
Can I fit a cheaper tyre with a lower rating? No. Fit the specified load index and speed rating or higher.
Is XL the same as run flat? No. XL means extra load. Run flat needs a car set up for it.
How old can a new tyre be? Check the date code. Recent stock is preferable, and five years from manufacture is commonly treated as the limit.
What tyre pressure should I use? The cold pressure on the placard for your load, not the sidewall maximum.
Key tyre terms explained
These are the terms you will see on a tyre quote and on the sidewall.
- Tyre placard
- The label in the door pillar or fuel flap listing approved tyre sizes and cold pressures.
- Load index
- A number showing the maximum load each tyre can carry at the correct pressure.
- Speed rating
- A letter showing the maximum speed the tyre can sustain at its rated load.
- XL
- Extra load. A reinforced tyre that carries more load than a standard tyre of the same size.
- DOT date code
- The last four digits on the sidewall, showing the week and year of manufacture.
- Rolling circumference
- The distance a tyre travels in one turn. 4MOTION cars need it closely matched.
What we check before quoting VW tyres
Before any tyre is quoted in our Al Quoz 4 workshop, we work through the same checks so the replacement matches your car.
Specification first
The right tyre starts with the placard, not the price list.
-
We read the tyre placard and confirm the approved sizes, load index and speed rating for your car.
-
We check the tyres currently fitted against that specification, front and rear.
-
We measure tread on all four tyres and look for uneven wear that points to alignment or suspension faults.
-
We check the wheels, valves and pressure sensors for damage or leaks.
-
We confirm the date code of the supplied tyres and explain the quote line by line before fitting.
What to send for a tyre quote
These details let us confirm the right tyre and give you a fitted price before your visit.
- Model, year and trim
- A photo of the tyre size marking
- A photo of the tyre placard
- How many tyres you need
- Front and rear sizes if different
- How you mainly drive, city or highway
- Any uneven wear or vibration
- Whether a pressure warning is on

Questions about Volkswagen tyres in Dubai
Which tyres should I buy for my Volkswagen?
The right tyre is the one that matches the approved size, load index and speed rating for your exact car, shown on the tyre placard and in the owner manual. Within that specification, choose a quality summer tyre range that suits how you drive, whether that is quiet city comfort, highway use or performance driving.
Can I fit a different tyre size to my VW?
Only sizes approved for your model and wheels should be fitted. Different sizes can change speedometer readings, clearance and handling, and on 4MOTION cars can affect the drivetrain. If you want different wheels, the approved alternatives are listed in the owner manual, or the workshop can confirm them from the VIN.
Do I need to replace all four tyres at once?
Not always. Tyres on the same axle should match, and some 4MOTION models need all four closely matched in rolling size and tread depth. If the remaining tyres are in good condition and a matching tyre is available, one or two may be enough. The other tyres are measured before deciding.
Are summer tyres the right choice in the UAE?
Yes. Summer tyres are designed for warm conditions and give strong grip on hot dry roads and in occasional rain. Winter tyres use soft compounds that wear quickly and handle poorly in UAE heat. Some all season tyres are available, but a quality summer tyre is usually the right choice for Dubai driving.
What does XL mean on a VW tyre?
XL means extra load. The tyre is reinforced to carry more weight than a standard tyre of the same size, and usually needs a slightly different pressure. If your VW specifies XL tyres, the replacement should also be XL. XL is not the same as run flat, which is a different construction.
How do I check the age of a tyre?
Find the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits show the week and year of manufacture, so 2526 means week 25 of 2026. Check this before new tyres are fitted. In the UAE, tyres more than five years past manufacture are commonly treated as due for replacement.
What tyre pressure should my VW use?
Use the cold pressures on the tyre placard in the door pillar or fuel flap, choosing the figure for your load. Check when the tyres are cold, early in the day or after parking in shade. The maximum pressure printed on the sidewall is a limit, not the correct setting for your car.
Do new tyres need a wheel alignment?
Not every time, but alignment is worth checking if the old tyres wore unevenly, the car pulled to one side, or the steering wheel was off centre. New tyres fitted to a car with an alignment fault start wearing unevenly from the first day. Balancing is a separate job and should be done whenever tyres are fitted.
How much do Volkswagen tyres cost in Dubai?
Our guide is AED 500 to 2,500 per tyre, depending on size, ratings and the range chosen. Compact sizes can cost less, and large SUV or performance tyres can cost more. Alignment, if needed, is quoted separately. The written quote names the exact tyre and what the fitting includes before you approve it.
