Why does a VW DSG judder or lose drive?
On 7 speed DSG cars with the DQ200 dry clutch gearbox, the usual causes are a failing mechatronic unit or worn clutches. A government recall notice covered DQ200 mechatronics on Golf and Jetta 1.4 TSI, Passat 1.8 TSI, Polo, Scirocco and Touran from 2009 to 2012, because a fault could interrupt power.
- Judder when pulling away or creeping in traffic usually points to the clutch pack.
- A flashing gear display or a sudden switch to neutral points to the mechatronic unit.

Why do some TSI engines rattle on a cold start?
A rattle for a few seconds after a cold start on an older TSI petrol engine is a classic sign of timing chain stretch or a worn tensioner. It is the fault we check first on these engines, because a chain that jumps a tooth can damage the valves.
EA111 1.2 and 1.4 TSI, about 2006 to 2012, in the Polo, Golf, Jetta and Tiguan. Earlier EA888 1.8 and 2.0 TSI engines before the third generation, in the Golf GTI, Jetta, Passat, CC and Tiguan.
A short rattle on a cold start, a check engine light, and stored camshaft and crankshaft correlation codes such as P0016.
Fault memory, live timing data and chain stretch values before any engine is opened. The result decides chain, tensioner and guide work.

Some earlier 1.8 and 2.0 TSI engines also use more oil than expected between services. Check the level every few fuel stops if your car has this engine.
Why is my VW losing coolant with no visible leak?
On 1.8 and 2.0 TSI engines from the third EA888 generation, the plastic water pump and thermostat housing is a known leak point. Heat cycles make the plastic brittle, so coolant can seep and evaporate before it drips.
These signs often show on a Golf 7, GTI, Golf R, Passat, Tiguan or Arteon. In Dubai summer traffic a small leak can turn into overheating quickly, so do not keep topping up and driving.

What causes misfires and a flashing engine light on a VW?
On TSI petrol engines, misfires most often come from a failing ignition coil or worn spark plugs. A flashing engine light means an active misfire that can overheat the catalytic converter, so reduce speed and get it checked.
Ignition coils
Heat and age break them down. A single coil can cause a rough idle and codes P0301 to P0304. Coil work is listed at AED 800 to 1,200 on our ignition coil page.
Spark plugs

Carbon build up
Older direct injection engines can collect deposits on the intake valves, which causes cold start misfires.
Crankcase breather

Why does a Touareg sag overnight?
A second generation Touareg with air suspension that sits lower at one corner after parking usually has a leaking air strut or a worn compressor. Dubai heat and dust are hard on the rubber air springs and the compressor.

Why do VW batteries and electrics fail in Dubai heat?
High under bonnet temperatures shorten battery life on every model, and a weak battery causes warnings that look like bigger faults. Check the battery first when several unrelated lights appear at once.

What should Volkswagen ID. owners in the UAE check?
In 2023 the UAE Ministry of Economy stopped used car dealers importing Volkswagen ID. electric models, after many arrived without a manufacturer warranty or GCC specification. Cars sold through authorised dealers are not affected. If you own or plan to buy an ID.4, ID.5 or ID.6, confirm its origin, warranty and software status first.
